I was in “Good Olde MCI” yesterday after being bumped again. This time off the MCI-ORD 10:50 AM flight. It was the first segment on my way home on this easy one day 4 segment $50 mileage run (2 one ways at $25 each with the coupons). My scheduled arrival back in Savannah was 5:20 PM. I am now scheduled to go back through Washington and arrive home at about 6:34 PM.
I slept on both segments here and was comfortably playing on my computer with stuff spread all over when the gate agent makes that famous announcement
“If there is one traveler with flexible…..”
I am dumbfounded but jump up, my pants almost falling to my knees, grab all my stuff (I think) and beeline to the counter. The agent sees me coming so I have the first spot secured. Two other lesser mortals wandered up just a bit too slow. Again, I fell short on my Proper, Prior Planning. It pays to ask every single time, particularly with the airlines cutting capacity. Here I had to make a fool of myself with my pants down by my knees hauling all that stuff precariously across the waiting room.
Again, they are offering a free ticket. What do I need a free ticket for? Not. So we negotiate the $400 travel voucher and the first agent heads back to boarding the flight without completing the transaction. My nice guy agent shows up and says: What flight is he putting you on?” and I tell him I’m not sure. He checks Chicago and can get me home by 10:30 PM and I ask him to check Dulles as I already know in my head it is a 6:34 PM arrival going that way.
He can’t get into that flight for some reason says he has to put me into Chicago and says:
“I really need your seat. I’ll give you the $400 and a free ticket and send you through Chicago”
I’m just A OK with that and shut my mouth. He then starts justifying to himself why he should do that and now gets the Washington connection to work. So now I’m back to a $400 voucher only and he says:
“Unless of course you want to go through Chicago”
My response is: “Sure for the voucher and the free ticket” We have hit the wall. That is not going to happen. We laugh and joke and all is well in “Good Olde MCI”
So as I wait and type this blog entry, I decide to heed my own advice and head back up to the counter and volunteer again for the new flight I’m on. It seems they are at 64 of 66 seats and he takes my name again, this time first on the list with my pants at the proper level.
We will keep you advised. No second bump. Made it home at 6:34PM
