Now and through the end of March, you will receive a 30% bonus (up to 12,000 miles) when you buy AA miles. The actual cost comes down to about 2 cents per mile which is not great for domestic coach awards, but not too bad if you are redeeming for international premium cabin awards.
And of course, all miles earned count towards lifetime status on American. There is a 40K cap per year on purchased or gifted miles.
