It didn’t go exactly as planned but I still got the bump yesterday. The alarm went off at 4 AM and the cab picked me up at 4:15 for the 10 minute ride to the airport. I was first in line by about 5 minutes before the next traveler showed up. I gave my name and and asked about the direct flight at 8:50 AM. Sold to capacity and she wouldn’t commit to using that flight if I was needed for the bump. The 6AM to Chicago was at 64 with a capacity of 60.
I headed to the gate not knowing what would happen, but confident I had done all I could to cover my bases. I checked in with Lori at the gate, just letting her know her volunteer was here and then got out of the way.
About 5:40 AM the 61st passenger checked in and I was called to the gate, told they would be using my seat and sent back to the ticket counter. (you guys are all still sleeping). There was no space on the direct Denver, I was informed that I could go the next day and declined. The ticket agent was weak at processing denied boardings and needed to call the help desk. I asked for exactly the same convoluted routing on the 9th (no space) but it was available (all in first) on the 10th and I was all set with a $400 voucher in pocket and headed back home by 6:05 AM.
The cab fare with tip each way was $20 so my net was $360. I got home in time to take Katybug to the Emergency Room for her shift and back to bed I went. The cost of my 4 mileage runs to Denver this year were $110+110=70=70=$360. The voucher less cab fare made them all free and the miles still keep piling up.
