We tried your suggestion for a store card( American Eagle) for my daughter (19). She was turned down for not having a credit history. Are some stores easier to get cards approved with no history? Any suggestions? Thanks.

I hit my 30k voucher a good while back and they promptly post it to your account. We have redeemed it to fly business into London on 23rd. A bit dicey perhaps, but luckily we booked rewards on the flight that goes JFK>LCY (London City, the small airport in the East End) which is relatively normal at moment. fingers crossed, it may have been one of the smartest booking I ever made.

Ya…met the BA spend this year too after getting the 100K offer in Feb. Only to discover that redeeming for 2 biz tix will cost me $875 in "fees" & taxes for a DFW-LHR route.
Cost is 1coach or 1/2 price of 1biz tix, but paying $875 is highly ridiculous BA! Especially since you've earned money from my 30k spend too…! These 2 tix should be no more than $300 for taxes & airport fees.

When we first came to the US we had no credit record. First store card I got was a Macys with a $100 limit.

Credit scoring is a strange animal. Very difficult for most people to understand, including myself, but so important to your future so better to get it right as you go.

I had what seemed to be excellent credit, Fico of just over 750 but couldn't seem to break thru that. I had a 20+ year credit history with store cards up to the Amex Plat card, but I had never had an auto loan and since I had inherited several houses never had a mortgage. I was told that I was not "well-rounded" and I needed a mortgage! I wasn't about to go out and buy a house just to increase my Fico but did find a credit union who gave me a no cost HELOC which now shows up as a mortgage and my FICO actually went above 800. Sounds crazy, but it worked so now I have more play room to churn CC's I suppose, LOL.

Oh what us mileage chasers will do, eh?

My 18 year old niece who had no credit history just got a low limit gas card. Might be an option to consider.

I'm 22.

I just recently got my first credit card from Capital One.

I had never considered a store card, but it seems like a good option. Should I apply for a store credit card to increase my available credit? What should my short term goal be for available credit and for my number of cards?

As for not paying the entire balance of a card, but more than the minimum. If my line of available credit is $500, how much should I leave as a running balance to get the best results?

I really love the blog and I am really excited for this series. I'm looking forward to the next two installments. Thanks!

My first two store credit cards were Sears and JC Penney (this was mid-1990s). Also a Texaco credit card. All of them were, at the time anyway, pretty easy to get and I had no other credit except a Visa card opened a few years prior in college.

Rick.. Aren't there starter credit cards where you pay a yearly fee and put down a small deposit? I remember seeing them at least 2 years ago for people with very bad credit or no credit at all.

My first card in highschool was the Capital One card that doesn't have any rewards. Still have it because it has no foreign transaction fee. However they still have me at the $1,000 limit they set for me 5 years ago but oh well.

@brigit – Not certain regarding retail credit, but to establish credit history for your daughter, have her open a passbook installment loan from your local bank. This is a good way to establish a credit history. Fund a passbook savings account or CD and use that as collateral for the loan. Ask your local banker. It is fairly common.

Also opening a account at Chase when I was in highschool 5 years ago, I signed up for a credit card. It didn't have any rewards and had $250 limit. Better than nothing.

I currently have the Chase OnePass MC, and I've had it since about May 2010. Do you think I could cancel it now and be approved when I re-apply for the Mile-a-thon?

I'd love to get even more CO miles, but I don't want to lose the card if I can't get it back, as it's one of my main sources of free CO miles right now.

cbte: Do the Chase Sapphire Preferred card for 25K of CO miles. There is an ad on the right hand blog column. They transfer 1:1 from Chase ultimate rewards points. Katy and I have both done this seamlessly.

Chase is tough on churning cards. My guess would be NO

I've also read elsewhere to actually always leave some balance on your credit cards. I don't like the idea of having to pay interest (I almost always pay in full). So that leaves the question, how much should I leave unpaid so as to incur as little interest as possible? $100? $50? $25?

That's a good plan for getting more CO miles, but I'm guessing the Sapphire card would not get me any credit for the Mileathon. Oh well, I might just try my luck anyway…
