What you mean by " I updated my card"?

When I called about a week ago to take advantage of this offer the agent informed me that it would be a hard pull, so for me it wasn't worth it. You should check your credit report to find out if they did a hard pull.

  • FrugalTravelGuy

Anon: Good Point. They approved my instantly so not sure if it was or not???

  • FrugalTravelGuy

I doubt it would be a hard pull as they had already approved the card.

Can this be done on non MR Amex cards? Say someone wants to do this with their SPG Amex?

  • George

easy 5k MR pts, thanks! I called the number on the back of my card. I just said I heard from a friend I can get 5k pts for adding the "Extended payment option" to my card. Yes the csr said. Done deal, they will show up in 6 to 8 weeks!

    Hi Rick,
I had this offer pop up on my account page a few weeks ago. It said just I was "pre-approved" and all I needed to do was "Click Here". I did so and 10 days later nothing was changed so I called and was informed that my account did not qualify but they would give me 5,000 points for my "trouble". OK by me, all I wanted was the points anyway. Gotta love that AMEX customer service!

How do you check whether a card has enrolled in Extended Payment Option?

My wife was being prompted to add this feature to her gold card for 5000 MR, often on logging out of her Amex profile.

Good deal… I tried repeatedly logging in/out of my account and wasn't presented with the offer. I copied the URL though and was able to add the feature to both of my personal amex charge cards. After a few weeks, they all received 5000 MR.

Is this something you can just call to add on an existing Premier Rewards account? I'll give this a shot!

Hi Rick, This is an unrelated question to today's post. I have little kids that are not old enough to apply for credit cards. Has anyone found a way to keep my kids' miles from expiring. Every time I get them miles for some promo or from flying they end up expiring. Is there a way to keep my 3 year old's miles active? The miles we mostly have are American and United. Thanks for any information. -Megan

I just called to enroll my cards but I was told that this promotion is "by invitation only" and that my cards are "too new" to be considered (they were both opened in 2010). Annoying!

The rep I spoke with just now mentioned that this
was offered to "seasoned" account holders whose
accounts were at least 1 1/2 years old.

Since I won't be paying the annual fee which
kicks in after a year on the Premier Rewards Card,
    it's a no go.

So this seems like a retention bonus in disguise.

I didn't see my post the other day, so I'll try again on this topic, which is more relevant anyhow dealing with credit scores.

I realize you are running a blog here,,,, but I think you should not hide creditkarma.com near the bottom of the list, buried strangely next to a PAY site. In my opinion, creditkarma.com should be put on top, since it's the only truly free site that does not charge or trick you into enrolling into a payment scheme. I realize you probably get referral fees from the other sites, but for the good of the readers, you should either signify creditkarma.com as the only free site or at least put it at the top,,,, or at the very least give the site it's own line like all the rest…

Or maybe let me try posting another way. Sorry, this is my first time posting here even though I read your blog religiously!

    @ Megan

Have you tried looking at shopping portals? There is one usually for most major airlines. If you have itunes you can go to the portal, click on the link, and download a song which will send at least a mile or two to keep the account active

  • FrugalTravelGuy

Jerry; I added the free sites as I got them. If I wanted to hide creditkarma, I wouldn't list it at all. I have indicated numerous times in email and by post it is free without credit card. I just consider it the best dealas I can see all three scores with other sites like Truecredit which is the site I use and on the bottom of the list. If remembering to cancel the trial period is a big deal for you then by all means use the creditkarma site

Called AMEX, they said this is by invitation only. Does anyone have a url we can use???

  • FrugalTravelGuy

Stephen; It shows right on the top of my summary of accounts at Amex.com

I talked to 3 different agents and they all said that my premier rewards gold account must be at least 6 months old before the offer will be available to me. Not sure if that is accurate, but at least it is consistent. :) I created a reminder in outlook to notify me at the 6 month mark so that I can try it again. Thanks for the heads up, Rick! I read your blog on a daily basis and have passed the link along to several people. Keep up the good work!

Hmm – I just tried giving SPG activation a call, and spoke with someone very nice. Nice as they were, they didn't know about any promotion, or extended payment option, and didn't give me any points :(

    Thanks for the tip anyway!

    Hi Rick,
I wonder why for some it is only 1500. Very strange. Mentined that some get 5000 but was told this is what is on my card…

A FT thread also mentioned 1500.

I decided to wait and call later. Any ideas how to make them grant the 5K? :)

  • Elizabeth

Just to add another data point here. I searched "extended payment" on the Amex site once I was logged in. It gave me a link where I could see whether I was eligible or not. It says I wasn't- I have an SPG card that I've held for about 6 months now.

  • Anonymous

SPG Cards are already extend payment.

I phoned and was also told you need the invitation code and that since my account was new the invitation wouldn't come out to me for a while.

For those with older charge cards good deal. At least I got the 5K for Single Identity.

  • Robert

After chat with CS, the 5000 MR apparently doesn't apply to business cards and only applies to certain personal cards, Blue not being one of those.
