American Express Premier Rewards Card Applications

I thought this reader’s email may be of interest to some of you. As always YMMV.

Hi Rick,

Back at the beginning of February, your blog had a little discussion about the
possibility of applying for Premier Rewards credit cards. I decided to try it without
getting a targeted offer and see what happened. I first transferred my existing
Membership Rewards points over to British Air, then canceled my existing
Premier Rewards card. Two days later, I applied online for a new Premier Rewards
card, using a link that offered 25K bonus points with the standard “Offer not
available to existing consumer American Express Charge Card members” language. I
was approved, and then had to do my $1K initial spend. I just completed that
spend last week (a little slow because I’m juggling multiple card bonuses), and
see this morning that I have been given the 25K bonus points.

So, at least for me, it was possible to do the applications with almost no lapse in
time between cards, and without receiving a targeted offer. As always, YMMV.

A friend and I noticed this in the fine print:

"You will receive 50,000 bonus miles with this bonus offer, which can be redeemed for 1 transatlantic reward flight in World Traveller, economy class from the USA to Europe Zone 1, or choose to redeem for another qualifying flight. Europe Zone 1 includes the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Switzerland"

Does this mean that we can only fly from the US to Europe Zone 1? Does anybody know what other qualifying flights are?

This one-time bonus offer is valid only for first-time cardmembers with new accounts. Previous and existing cardmembers/accounts are not eligible for this bonus offer.

I'm pretty sure you could use the mile for whatever routing you want. There is no way to determine which miles in your account are the CC sign up miles or BIS miles or CC spend miles. Once they are in your account they are in one big pile so to speak.

They are just defining how you COULD use the 50,000 miles. Not how you HAVE to use them.

I think the key word in their fine print is "can". Not "must".

@Anon, these miles are put into your BA account and you can use them for BA awards,or partner awards if you like.

I see that BA is part of the alliance w/ American Airlines. Does this mean that I can redeem the 50000 (potentially 100k miles) for flights within the continental US?

You'll get 100K BA miles if you meet the terms. You can use those 100K miles on whatever the BA, Partner or BA OneWorld award chart allows.

Skip the OneWorld chart, it's distance based and costly. BA awards are great for some routes, as are BA Partner awards. Note that partner awards mean only ONE partner, or ONE partner plus BA. Any more than that and it becomes an expensive OneWorld award.

THanks RIck! I so hope I get approved for this one. I just got a 50,000 Continental Card in February from Chase so I hope they will give me this one. I also like you got declined for the Capital One 100,000 card. Now, I'm kind of glad because this is WAY better!

Would there be only one hard pull if I apply this BA visa and CO business mastercard on the same day (two browsers, BA first and CO right after)?
I am thinking about getting the CO card before it goes away.

I got approved for my Southwest Chase card December 12th. Do you advise me to apply for both this BA (Chase) card and the Continental (Chase) card at the same time? And should I apply before April 15th to get the extra Continental miles, or wait until June (6 months after my last Chase card). I guess there are just too many good opportunities out there right now!

Just used your link and got instant approval–thanks Rick! I'm leaving for London in 6 days, think I could call and see if they can expedite the card to me? Would love to use this card since there are no foreign fee charges.

Do you know a phone # to contact them if you don't get an instant decision? How long would you wait to contact them? My app came back with a decision pending we will contact you in 10 days and can take up to 30 days. I'm worried they won't give it to me because I already have 2 other cards with Chase, United (Nov) & Continental (Feb). Any thoughts Rick?

Rick, I'm planning to travel to Italy in June and Peru in September. Do you think I would be able to book an award flight to these places using the points? Or am I too late for booking award tickets? Thanks!

I recently received the Chase Continental card in February and I have another Chase card. Given the recent Chase acquisition coupled with the fact I already have two Chase CC accounts is it assumed I would be denied for this card as well? Any advice is appreciated, Thanks!

I applied for the Hyatt card (chase) in Feb and was going to apply for the Continental card (also chase) this month….but now the BA card has come out (chase again). Knowing that the Continental card will not be back, but this offer might be, should I still apply for the Continental card or since this is twice the miles should I apply for the BA card? Thanks for your suggestion and all of the good work you do! :O)

You've mentioned before that if declined you can negotiate by offering to close or lower the line on one of your other chase CCs. I have to close my United card this month (and I got the CO card one month ago). Do you think its better to wait to close the United card so I have a negotiating tool, or will I just have a better chance in the first place if I close it before applying for the BA?

Also does anyone know if a month between getting two chase cards is enough?

Anon later. I would do this card (BA) now for the 100K but like your thought process.

NIck: Save closing the UA card as you may need it as a negotiating tool.

Dustin and Stephanie: |Assuming your credit scores are ok you BOTH may be approved for the card. thats 200,000 BA points,., Do not apply together on one application

Thanks Rick, just got approved instantly via your link. Also took advantage of the 2x 75,000 mile AAdvantage Visa/MCs in December so that's a whopping 250k miles for just 3 cards…for a grand total of 500k miles together between the two of us!

I recently got both the Chase SW Visa and the Chase CO MC – both 2/28 – I also got the "too many inquiries" denial from a Business card app (AA) – I've been on a tear recently (doing the platinum/delta gold deal, the two Chase cards above, and the Cap One offer). Any indication how long this offer will be around? I am dying to take advantage of it but don't want to take the unnecessary hit to just get rejected.
