Today is the last day to apply. I know some of you have been waiting as long as you can to keep your applications as far apart as possible, BUT, based on all the information I have, this is the deadline day.“Unfortunately the limited-time, 100k-mile offering from the British Airways Visa Signature® Card is getting ready to expire. We could rehash the bennies over and over again, but no need. You all know this is about as good as it gets. It does not appear that if you got this card the last time the promotion was available, you will not qualify for the 100,000 miles again.

Today is your day to be a hero with your friends and relatives. Or if they won’t pay, use their credit with their approval. Give them four domestic tickets on AA for a total of $95. Try your best to explain the benefit. I know, I know, believe me. Ninety-nine percent of people don’t get it.

Grandma and Grandpa who don’t fly but have great credit — this could be your Christmas present to them. Your teacher, coworker, that girl or guy you have been trying to strike up a conversation with, the cop that pulls you over today for speeding…

I agree on the sharing thing… there's no point in keeping secrets because in this day and age someone else knows the same thing anyway.

Nice to see you had the secret all along. My brother just did what you recommend (thought of it on his own I guess) with the BA offer from 60k to 100k.

I've taken the overnight train from Beijing to Xi'an and it was a pleasant experience. Plenty of time to sleep (bed was not the most comfortable, but decent nonetheless) and have a full day in the city. As far as the hotel goes, I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Xi'An for $80/night or something. Great club lounge with very helpful staff. Note that it will probably be a madhous outside the Xi'An station.

In Shanghai, I found a deal at the Swissotel which was around the corner from the metro stop and provided great access everywhere.

In Beijing, it was the Grand Hyatt – right near Tienanmen square. Super pricey, so I'd only stay on points/free nights.

With four days in Dubrovnik, I'd strongly suggest renting a car for two days to visit some of the amazing neighboring places. Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Kotor (Montenegro) are two of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The drive to Kotor is especially beautiful.

We just got back from Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. It was a great trip. In Beijing we stayed with friends so I can't help with a hotel there but in Shanghai we stayed at the Grand Mercure Zhongya. It was a couple of stops out of downtown but the metro was literally downstairs and the train station was across the street. The hotel rivaled the 5 star one we stayed at in Hong Kong. Plus we got a club level room with breakfast included for $75 per night.

Applied for the Chase BA and it is going through a system review right now. I called a number and they said they cannot do anything until the review is done. If I get approved after May 6th – can I still get the bonus?

Even better, the high speed rail between Beijing and Shanghai should be running by the time you get there in July: about 4 hours Beijing to Shanghai. The high speed already goes Shanghai to Hangzhou and Suzhou, both of which are well worth a day at a minimum.

I *highly* recommend spending time outside of the major cities. You should have no trouble organizing a homestay in a village near the Great Wall or something similar for a night. Basically, Beijing, Shanghai and the East Coast cities are totally different from rural China (which is much poorer and much more traditional). With 10 days, you don't have time to go too far off the beaten path, but definitely check out the rural life and not just the skyscrapers!

One last thing: China changes really fast. An area in Shanghai called Tianzifang wasn't really known a few years back, and now it's a really cool "outdoor mall" or sorts set in traditional alleyways. In Beijing, the 798 art district wasn't really on the radar, and now it's very popular.

Hi Rick!

We did China and North Korea last year and had a great time. Stayed on Starpoints at the Le Meridien Shanghai (which is in a very convienent location on Nanjing road and very close to the subway) and twice at the Westin Beijing Chaoyang on Starpoints as well (also VERY close to the subway). As SPG Gold, we were upgraded both times at the Westin; once to a Club level room (the club is really nice!!) and once to a renewal room (which featured a complimentary "bathologist" service). One of the highlights of our trip was our visit to the Great Wall via vintage motorcycle sidecars with Shanghai Sideways (www.shanghaisideways.com). It was a little pricey, but totally worth it! Also– do not miss Da Dong for Peking Duck in Beijing!

Can you "double dip" on Hilton Honors credit card bonuses by getting the AmEx one and the Citi one?

I have only the AmEx one but am considering getting the other one too for extra bonus miles!

I have been meaning to tell you that for Amsterdam, you need to purchase your tickets to Anne Frank House online. You print them out, and go straight to the special entrance to the left of the main entrance. Walk right up and pass everyone else in line. It’s convenient, and it saves a lot of queuing time, since usually the line is around the corner.
