5,000 or 50,000 Membership Rewards Points Mercedes Amex Card

Posted by Monday, August 22, 2011, No Comments

There are two offers here, one for 5000 MR points and one for 50,000. The annual fees are $95 and $450 respectfully. The $450 offer also includes lounge access for one year which is in essence free as the Memebership Rewards points are worth the $450 by themself.

Yup. Golden goose gets killed when a number of relatively high traffic travel blogs (seem to be a lot cropping up lately) post the same info. I've been turned down for EVERY bonus I've called or written in for with the excuse that I've not been targeted. But that's life. On to the next deal.

The insite 10k bump worked for me the other day, but only after being declined at first and asking again. Was declined today for the PRG bump to 75k and appealing that one as well based on my huge annual Amex spend, but not very confident. Even the Plat bump a few months ago was tough.

I love Amex and Amex loves me.

My local restaurants hate Amex so I give them capitalone

Whoa whoa whoa, so AMEX MR is going back and retroactively cancelling codes that their reps already agreed to apply to people's accounts?!

    Rich,
Is it possible to get another SPG card? Can you have more than one at the same time?

Has anyone had any luck bumping the bonus in the last day or two?
Also, if I have points pending from a successful bump the bonus do you think those will be taken away?!

  • Laura

I too had problems bumping the bonus on the Am X Gold to 75K, it took several calls and a lot of time on hold. Eventually I was allowed the one "best available" even though I wasn't targeted but declined for the other bonuses (only one per customer).

Hopefully there won't be negative and crass comments about American Express due to this – it's the worst thing in the world to hear people complaining that they didn't get something that they shouldn't have in the first place.

Hoko a reader emailed me to tell me his codes had been removed

Anon. You can get a second spg card but probably not another sign up bonus

If my points are in pending already do you think they will take them away?

The SPG application requires income and income source. I am not sure how to fill it in for my "stay at home mom" spouse. Can I list our household income here?

  • Anonymous

I did my spending for 100k on PLatinum, the added the bonus code and said that they should post after 8 weeks, which is about 5-6 weeks from now. Will they post?

    Rick,

Wouldn't it be likely to get another bonus on the 2nd SPG card, as long as the original was cancelled over 24 months previous?

I thought we had pretty good intel on this being AmEx's policy for determining "new" accounts.

  • FrugalTravelGuy

Anon: the original question did not state two years from closing a previous SPG card. If that is the case I believe another sign up bonus is available.

RE Income: Answer the question truthfully. Does it say household income? or personal income?

    Rick,

Thanks for your response about the SPG application. I am going to try to copy/paste the relevant SPG application form part here:

Total Annual Income:* $ .00 Income Source:*
Include income from all sources including employment, retirement, investments, rental properties, etc. Alimony, child support, or separate maintenance need not be revealed if you do not wish to rely upon it.

Ok not very pretty but you can see they give you a spot to enter Total Annual Income and the Income Source. Income Source lists Retired, Self-Employed, Unemployed, Employed, Student. I am not sure there is a good match for the source being Spouse.

I feel like you mentioned a regulation change that may be related to this. I am hoping this is not a sign of it being harder to sign up non-working spouses.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I just got of the phone with membership rewards. I had previously called and asked that Code 5721 (5x10k promo for adding authorized users, I have a premier gold card so the first 5 are free) be added to my account on 8/10/11 (they notated my account on 8/10 before I added the users). Since then I've added 5 users and they have all made 1 purchase. Called today after reading this post to confirm that I was still eligible. Membership rewards confirmed eligibility and notated my account that the promo requirements had been met as of today. 50k points should post within a few weeks. I'm thinking they are trying to shut down this promo to new requests, but seems like request from several weeks ago are still being honored.

Honestly, as with ALL bump the bonus situations… it really will be YMMV. Some people have received bumps on stuff that nobody else ever has, just for asking. The company has always been generous, and I think as long as you get the right person in the right mood, that most requests will still be honored.

We'll have to wait and see if MASS reports come in for bump the bonuses being removed.. Until then, I won't believe it honestly. I wouldn't attempt a bonus without several reports that it was positive or realistic – like the AMEX 2 year free columbia grad school card… it was not legit.

I got approved for the AMEX GOLD premier on Saturday with the 15K sign up bonus.

Called amex and made then re route me to membership rewards as I dont have the physical card in hand yet.

They promptly added the 6661 sign on bonus (75K with 1K spend in 3 months)

Then I asked for 6608 ( they rejected it saying its only for business gold 100K after 2K spend)

I now sent them a secured message for Bonus ID: 6664
The offer will give you 10,000 points for 15+ transactions you make. 50,000 point maximum. Make 15 transactions on your card in a calendar month and get 10,000 bonus points
Runs July – November 2011 (some reports it may end in October)

FWIW, I successfully bumped the bonus twice last night. Applied last week (8/16) thru the PRG link on your blog. You didn't have an Amex Biz Gold link at the time so I couldn't apply for that thru your blog. Got the CCs in the mail yesterday and bumped the bonus on both of them last night.

6608: 100k for $2k spend in 3 months on Biz Gold
6661: 75k for $1k spend in 3 months on PRG

Third time was the charm on PRG, and 2nd time was the charm on Gold Biz. If you fail, keep trying cuz this is a YMMV situation as the above poster stated. Fingers crossed I can try to add 6664 to at least my PRG (10k bonus per month for 15 transactions).
