2.75 cents each plus taxes divided by two with the bonus brings them down to about 1.4 cents each. Not free, but they are redeemable on all Star Alliance carriers.

I've got to say, this does not look like a good scenario to me. I don't like the way Bob brushes off the fact that he had $3,000 in uncollected debts. That's not something you just figure out when you run your credit score.

I'm all about people taking advantage of travel offers, but for someone to get ELEVEN credit cards right after settling uncollected debts? That sounds like an awful idea to me.

So let me get this straight….Bob charges $3,000 worth of goods, can't pay it off so decides to settle for $1,300. You then praise him for reaching an agreement to pay off a portion of his debts, so he can run up more debts by travelling? As someone who likely has to pay for some of what ole' Bob hasn't covered, I don't think it's great at all.

I agree with caseyfriday! I do not like Bob's smug attitude …

Having $3K worth of collection accounts is not something of which to be proud! And it wasn't until Bob's credit card app. was rejected that he faced what he saw as his choices: to "pay off some $3000 worth of collection accounts or wait for them to fall off my report in two years". (Apparently he didn't feel any obligation to pay them until he wanted free travel benies from credit card apps.)

What's even worse, IMHO, is deciding to pay less than half the amount owed so they would be written off (big black marks on a credit report and rightly so) just so he could take advantage of credit card bonuses! So now the rest of us can pay more for products and services because businesses need to raise prices to compensate for people like Bob who make bad choices! In the meantime, Bob is issued more credit (ELEVEN credit cards? – unbelievable!) and is bragging about the free vacations he will get.

This seems like a very bad example for blog readers and very uncharacteristic of the ethics I have come to appreciate in the FTG blog.

Sorry, but I don't think Bob deserves to be congratulated on 'reaching an agreement' with his creditors by paying less than half of what he owed for the products he now has! He got more than his money's worth alright, but at whose expense?!? So Bob wins and the rest of us lose!!

First, let me apologize to those of you who got angry over my settling with the collection companies. I would gladly have paid them in full if they could have deleted the harmful info off my credit reports, but they were unable or unwilling, so negotiating a lower amount seemed the business-like thing to do.
I entered into both of those purchases (in 2005/6) with absolutely no intention of paying. That's the reality, so paying them off, even for a lower amount than owed, was not something I even wanted to do. That was kind of the point-it was this website that inspired me to settle the debts in the first place.
Some of you may not like me not paying in full, some may not like me for applying and getting approved for so many cards. I wrote in because I thought it might inspire some others with old debts to settle up and get on the points gravy train while it lasts.
And finally, Amex upped my 10k bonus to 50k a few minutes ago.

Let me make sure I understand this correctly…

Are you saying that you made $3,000 worth of purchases that you had absolutely no intention of paying for?!? YIKES!!! And you decided you didn't have to pay your debt in full, even though you apparently had the means to do so, because the collection agencies couldn't or wouldn't delete the harmful info from your credit report?!? OMG!!! What in the h___ made you think they would or should do that?!? Don't you know that the purpose of credit reports is to help lenders decide if you are a good credit risk? It is the job of agencies to provide the credit bureaus with that information … that is the whole purpose!!! Otherwise, they would be useless!!!

I sincerely hope that others with old debts will see this as the very bad example it is and will do the honest and responsible thing – pay their debts in FULL instead of cheating the rest of us!!

You certainly sound like a narcissist who needs professional help. I sincerely hope that you will see the error of your ways and get the help you need!!
