Good advice on most of this, though it does reveal some of your biases(which are also good to know). Was there more than supporting the underdog is good for the country in 'A World Series for the "Cubbies" would be good for the country'? Not being a baseball person, I'm suspecting there are other baseball underdogs, but I'm not sure if the Cubs are the most underdogged(if that is a word).

Awww. Congrats! You sound like a wonderful grandpa already. From personal experience, my kids grandparents are all a true blessing in all of our lives. They are always so fun & patient…. Seeing the world through a little kids eyes makes life a lot more exciting! Enjoy your new "role" in life!

Those first few days are just so special. Hope you are taking lots of pictures, as they just go by in such a blur. Glad you got to be in the room when he was born. My dad, mom, aunt, and husband were all in the room (though dad was also tucked in the corner!) when C was born. It was special for all of us. I'm so excited to follow Carter's traveling journey.

BTW, if you don't give her some miles to put him in his own seat as he gets bigger, I'm going to come and clunk you over the head. If I had to fly a flight of any length with my 20 month old 30 pound wiggle worm on my lap I would have to be sedated.

I agree with MMS, he should so come to Chicago! Six weeks old sounds like the perfect time for a first flight. Congrats again.

that said…you're NOT serious about holding an infant in arms on an aircraft are you? despite the cost of buying a separate seat that's kinda nutty…. you wouldn't think of not putting the infant in a car seat in your car, would you? sorry about the rant and back o the main thing…

It is a truly wonderful life seeing the miracle of birth and the happiness it ensues. Seeing people express themselves with a little one is really a touching process, and something I never get tired hearing/seeing/reading. Congratulations "papa" and may you enjoy the rewards of Grandparenthood!!

What a year. A hot trudge through China to satisfy a desire; and now a true blessing for your family. Run the idea of a China trip next year past Katybug, and see if it generates the same level of enthusiasm now that Carter has arrived.
I'm always grateful for the travel tips I read on this website. It's been harder for me to accomplish my travel goals since the start of the Great Recession. And I know my travel clock is ticking. At the end of my travels, I'll know what Dorothy knew, "There's no place like home."; and I'll be content to sit in my rocker and watch the little children play.

You are hilarious Rick! Love this! Thanks for sharing your personal life. Congratulations to you & Shannon. Having babies is hard work…..not just that day but for the rest of your life (I hear…as mine are now 2 & 7). Enjoy being a Grandpa. Such precious days ahead for you! And tell Shannon that flying with children is very easy if you start them young, come well equipped, and train them well. My boys have already traveled a great deal domestically & international. My 18 month old was superb on his first 11 hour flight to Germany last year. Both my boys (18 month old & 6 yr old)were up for 4 hours and slept 7. And…we only had 3 paid seats. Daddy & Mommy didn't sleep great but they sure did. Next international flight will be 4 First class award tickets…..much thanks to your blog.
