The most common use of these exemptions has to be contact saline solution. I'm big pro- carryon only. It never fails that someone will say they just can't do that, because they need to check a 20oz bottle of saline solution. First, generally speaking, you can buy saline in most places around the world; worst case is in the airport areas. Second, how much do you really use? I can run on 3oz for about 2 weeks, maybe more, not sure. Thirdly, according to the TSA, you can bring that 20oz bottle in your carryon if you'd like. I've never needed to do this, but I've seen plenty of people in security lines tell the agent they have a large bottle of saline. The TSA people remove it, screen it separately off to the side, and send them on their way, no big deal.

Lastly, please I don't actually want everyone to convert to carry on only. I might run out of bin space then…

Benadryl is useful. Doubles as a safe antihistamine that can take care of some pretty nasty reactions, hives the like, and a pretty powerful sleep aide for most people. Those that have trouble sleeping while traveling, flying could also try melatonin; a little gentler than benadryl usually.

Thanks for your posting this info. I travel with a CPAP device for sleep apnea. I have always had to take a detour to a pharmacy after landing to pick up distilled water. Good to know I won't have to do that anymore. Now to find a 20oz bottle of distilled water that I can use for travel, since all I have seen in the US are the 1 gallon sized bottles.

Another hint I learned the hard way: it is work but an excellent idea to have a list of the ERs and hospitals at your destinations that have the best medical care in that area and that will have English speaking personnel.

The most important medication I travel with (besides a catch-all like ibuprofen) is ciproflaxin.

Cipro is hands-down the best medicine for food poisoning.

If you're heading somewhere a bit less civilized, like Mexico, or Asia, try and get a bit of this in your pack. Your doctor can prescribe it, or you can purchase it in a foreign country for next to nothing. It's gone generic so try and get the off-brand stuff.
