@Ryan – Hahaha! Ok, that *might* be a bit much for me … but if it works!

I used to work for someone that would do a trial pack the day before. Which, frankly for the time investment is a brilliant idea if you're not a frequent traveler and aren't sure what will / won't fit.

A word of caution about Mesa Airlines in HI. The airline has a very small fleet of planes so if a problem with a flight occurs (weather or mechanical), you may be inconvenienced for a long time. Also, their customer service has not won any awards if you know what I mean. Hawaiian Airlines has more planes and flights. Their prices may be more than Mesa's at times, but their reliability and plane size (no CRJs) more than make up for Mesa's discount prices.

Hi Howie,

I agree with you that the state department is a good place to start. However, I think you should have pointed out that the warnings can be quite sensational. I would stress your second recommendation that local government websites should also be used. I think a balanced approach between monitoring currents events, the state department, and local government sources is a travelers best bet.

@MidCentModFan – Appreciate the advice. I'll pay a little closer attention when we're in HNL on flights. The flight history looks pretty good (http://flightaware.com/live/flight/ASH1007), so I guess we'll keep our fingers crossed.

@Dan – Thanks for the feedback. I completely agree. A grain of salt should definitely be taken and never trust one source.

If your coming to my hood(Hawaii) and your looking for a good mileage redemtion for interisland then you should move your MR to virgin atlantic..they ahve interisland on Hawaiian rates for 6k roundtrip per person..i don't think they have one way rates..but i'm sure you can make it work… hnl to kona…then kona to kauai..kauai to kona then back kona to hnl

@bitachu, I just applied for the BOA Virgin Atlantic card a few days ago for exactly this reason. I'm going with my wife and daughter in mid-March, and we're doing some island hopping, except we're looking at Maui instead of Kauai (our daughter is 3, so I don't want to have to carry her on hikes around the Na Pali coast or in Waimea canyon). We used 105K BA miles (leaving me with a BA balance of 530!) to get 3 tickets from the East Coast during the pre-Avios rush. If we can use VA miles for inter island flights, our total costs for ~4K worth of flights will be about $80 in taxes and $185 in CC annual fees!
