I am driving the GOR too, in December.
Very true about diversifying. I was able to get a business class direct award flight during the busy Australian summer from California on 2 FF programs, going on OneWorld right before xmas and coming back on StarAlliance not long after new year when neither FF have roundtrip award flight available.

BTW, I am also planning a driving loop through the Grampians before heading south to the GOR then returning to Melbourne. Do you know if the Grampians is worth a stop?

How about flying to Japan on American for your challenge and then using JAL to fly to Australia. They have discounted redemption in business class from Japan for 50k, which is 40k Starwood points.

Anon: I am so sorry. SWU stands for systemwide upgrade. Good on higher category coach fares and upgradeable at time of booking on United. They are earned by reaching United 100,000 Mile level.
