My inspiration was my father. He was a DL million miler (Flying Colonel) when a million miles really meant something- in the 60's. I used to fly with him often on business appointments where it was acceptable. Boy, were things different back then….
What, no gribbenes for dinner? !!!

Your grandparents sound really fun. You are lucky!

@Carl – As long as you're willing to help clean up or fix a random technology problem!
@JohnnieD – Yes I could have if a flight was available within that window in the same fare class. That said, I had a time threshold that I wanted to be in London to meet.

Nice call out on Rick's appearance on Nightline:
Hilton Head Island’s Rick Ingersoll, author of The Frugal Travel Guy blog, will appear on ABC’s “Nightline” at 11:30 p.m. tonight. Ingersoll is one of the organizers of the annual Chicago Seminar, a grassroots-organized event on maximizing frequent-flier miles and rewards points to enjoy free or nearly free travel around the globe, according to a news release. "Nightline’s" John Donvan and producer Elizabeth Stuart attended the seminar Oct. 28-30 and filmed Ingersoll and other “travel hackers” for tonight’s segment. “We get students and retirees, business travelers and leisure travelers," Ingersoll said in the release. "People fly in from all over the country, and even internationally, to learn from expert speakers and meet other frequent travelers who share their interest – some would call it their obsession – with amassing miles and points. It’s the biggest party in frequent flier land.”
If my father were there he would have requested them. He tells me stories of when he'd leave school at lunch, go home and his grandmother would have them waiting for him. He'd put them on a bagel and throw it under the broiler for about 3 minutes … then he'd cut school in the afternoon and go watch the Dodgers play (when they played in a real ballpark)

travel hackers…sounds like criminals, so when they stamp out all the loopholes and end all the "hacking" schemes it will be a victory to the average traveler. Don't get me wrong I find Rick's blog diverse, and more substantial, than the growing list of bloggers on the boarding area. But bloggers like million mile secrets and other travel hackers are just going to kill the deals with publicity…the new breed of slickdealers looking to cash in FF points for easy money on gift cards are bad enough, we don't need publicity on national news shows to swell their ranks.
