Rookie Travel Tips
with Shannon

For those of you who consider yourselves novice to the “travel hacking” game, Fridays are for you. Every Friday we feature a winning travel tip that was submitted by a fellow reader and then we cover topics that help beginners gain a better understanding of the world of frugal travel. If you have a travel tip to share, submit it under the comments section for a chance to win $100 travel gift card each month.

This weeks winning tip goes to Shuji !

“Just wanted to pass along an easy money saving tip for people with families that might be booking trips on discount carriers such as Southwest and Jetblue. Whenever you are purchasing tickets, always check to see how much each ticket is by starting with one seat and increasing the number of seats by one to see if the prices change. For example, last night, I was booking a flight from OAK to SNA and noticed that when purchasing one seat, the cost was $89, but when I increased the number of seats to three seats, the cost was $119 each. I ended up buying 2 seats on one reservation, and then a third on a separate reservation and saved myself a quick $60 since I bought 2 seats at $89 each and 1 seat at $119 instead of 3 at $119 each. Hope this tip helps out some of your readers.”-Shuji

With the overwhelming amount of information we encounter while trying to learn this world of travel hacking, where do we begin?

1. Join the Major Award Programs

Airlines: American, Continental, United, Delta, US Airways, Alaskan Airlines.

Hotels: Starwood Preferred Guest, Marriott Rewards, Hilton Honors, Choice Privileges, Hyatt, and Best Western

Car Rental: Budget, Hertz, and Avis

It is free to join these programs and it is your first step to racking up some points. There are two different ways to approach this step: You can  join all the programs at once, or you can wait and join a program when they are offering bonus points for joining. The decision it totally yours.

2. Join Award Wallet

This is an amazing way to keep all of your programs and points organized. Once you add your program accounts into Award Wallet, it allows you to look at all of your awards programs from one page. This page is simple and displays the program, your account number, current balances, and any expiration dates for the redemption of points you currently hold. When you’re working from this page, an added benefit is the ability to click on the program name and have it link you to their page, automatically logging you in.

3. Sign up to receive Airline and Hotel program emails and newsletters.

A good way to catch the current promotions which are always changing.

4. Find a way to organize

Set up a “travel” folder to keep and organize coupons, vouchers, print outs of terms and conditions, and programs/promotions you may be working on.

5. Check your Credit Score for Free

Knowing your credit score and taking the right steps to manage, improve, and protect your credit is vital not only for getting bonus deals but for your life in general. Currently, the easiest way to obtain large amounts of bonus miles and points is through credit card sign-up bonuses. Having good credit and keeping it that way will open the door to big bonus points. Check out the left hand side of the blog for links to get your free credit score and keep reading this blog to learn how to get these big bonus points.

6. Read the Blogs Daily

On the right hand column of the blog you will see a “Links List.” Check out some of the other travel blogs. Those blogs are full of up-to-date information and you will learn a ton from them.

After absorbing all of this, remember that this world of free and frugal travel is vast and overwhelming. You will not learn it all at once. Take it “one post at a time,” be patient, and before you know it you’ll be globe-trotting on miles and points.

Take care and travel well!

As always, Points Break on Priority Club is a great deal. I just took advantage of it at Petra, Jordan. I would have been disappointed with their Crowne Plaza Hotel if I had paid to stay there, but at 5000 points/night, it was a steal.

Question for Andrew or for those from US who live in Australia: Can you apply for Australian credit cards in addition to US ones?

I just applied for my first Aussie Qantas card through Westpac and was approved. I'll be writing a post about applying for Australian cards in the coming weeks. The short of it, yes you can apply, however depending on your situation you may not be approved.
