Great reminder to recognize the people who make things go "right" when we travel.

At the Chicago "DO", Captain Flanagan suggested that gate agents like pens and a way to say thank you would be by giving them pens. I went home and gathered up all my surplus pens and put them in groups of 6 or so, stuffed them in small ziplock bags and carry them in my backpack when I travel. The first time I offered them to a gate agent he said "no thanks, I don't need any pens".
I wasn't discouraged.
The second time I offered the pens was to a young agent at the Air France check in counter and he was thrilled. He was out of pens so they came at just the right time and he was going to college for his masters degree and said he could really use them! You would have thought I had given him gold coins.
I'm thinking the pen thing might work best in third world countries however.

For weighting luggage, there are a number of fairly inexpensive (<$30) scales designed just for that purpose. They are typically a T-handle and a hook or strap and weigh very little themselves. If you're checking a bag for an extended trip and might also be adding souvenirs or other items, these scales can be packed fairly easily so you can know the weight of your bags for the return trip as well. I've been really glad to have my scale on a trip when my wife and I had bought some heavier souvenirs (2 wine bottles and some olive wood cutting boards). Our initial attempt at dividing it up had one suitcase at ~60 lbs and the other one sitting at ~30 lbs. Changed a few items around, and they both ended up under the 50lbs.

@Anonymous (re: weighing bag on its own) – on my scale I can't get the bag to sit properly on the scale and be able to actually read it. When I hold it I can see down at the reading
