I used priceline name your own price over the summer. I had a trip planned to LAX but was going to drive. However, my buddy bombed out two days before. Flights were very expensive so the day before I tried priceline. I ended up saving alot of money but I was supposed to be in LA no later than 4pm. Well the flight that was chosen for me got there at 4:30. I called priceline to see what my options were, and of course there were none, since it was name your own price. I then called the airline, which was american and it took several agents to finally tell me I could do a confirmed same day flight change for $50. for me it was worth it so I did it. It is a huge gamble to go this route, but in the end I did save some money

I occasionally book priceline but have been inclined to use the following strategy when I do my car rentals.
I book a refundable rate in advance I can live with and keep on checking as my travel dates draw near.I have yet to see rates go up as the travel date gets nearer and I rebook the better rates as travel day gets closer.
I just completed a 5 day minivan rental with Hertz. I originally booked at $487.00 tax in but upon checking the morning of my pickup date, I was able to secure the same type of rental vehicle with the same company for $169.00 all in. Thats over $300 in my pocket. I also get similar results using Hotwire.com sometimes with full size vehicles at $8-10 per day.

I've used princeline for a flight from hnl to lax..came out to 200$ so it wasn't that bad…probably not sure I would do it again

Haha. Recently, I have not been able to get those fantastic rates on car rentals that Priceline was known for in the past. It's my suspicion that those are now maybe only available on day of pickup.

@Bill you should also check carrentalsavers.com. I have often found better rates than priceline/hotwire via carrentalsavers.com.
