Just my humble opinion – but I honestly get the feeling that you are getting sucked into the "elite status" rat-trap. For someone that is retired and does a large amount of award travel, I fail to see why it is so crucial to attain Executive Platinum and spend good money and time on that pursuit.

I don't get the logic here. "Travel Hacking" is supposed to be a means to an end: work the system so you can see more of the world. In this case, your MR efforts have supplanted your actual travel plans and will (in the short run) result in you seeing fewer great, new, unique destinations. That's why I think the pursuit of status is a slippery slope…

I just booked a bunch of mileage runs for January yesterday on AA I never believed I would do mileage runs or bother with elite status on AA, but reading the various blogs has changed my mindset It's hard to pass up a good deal!

Anon: this effort is for 2013. I'll probably travel 80k butt in seat this year using my new SWU on American. Why NOT fly a few extra miles in January to insure 2013 status as well.

Man I have absolutely no idea how doing some domestic AA runs is going to cause me to fewer unique cities??? I won't be using my upgrades earned in 2012???

Pardon my ignorance but you're considering paying a fee to cancel a trip to Trinidad so you can do a mileage run to Tampa? How does this make sense?

I agree, wasting $300 for change fees is not really in the spirit of "frugal" traveling. $300 is a lot of money to most people.

Man and Mattolo: It depends on how many extra EQMs I can get in January with the double promo. For 10K not really worth it, but if I can bang our 30K extra EQM, well, well worth it. It is all in the math and your math may be different than mine.

so I was able to change my address to a CA one (I do own a home in CA), and I anticipate earning about 80k EQM on AA on about 9 flights in the month of January…I booked a bunch of flights between ORD and SFO as described in lucky's post (and buying a positioning flight on my own), but there's other good deals on flyer talk. Someone had good fares LGA-DFW-LAX, which inspired me to find a DCA-ORD-LAX-DFW-DCA one day turn.

Anyway, I would say that's worth $300 in change fees, if you're gonna go "all in" in the month of January doing mileage runs. Oh, mine are all weekend trips too.
