Happy New Year and a Sunday Success Story

Your Sunday Success Story will serve as a living example that all of us average Americans can indeed see the world at prices we can all afford. We can do this by working together and sharing our stories. Send your Success Story to me at rick@frugaltravelguy.com. Include your first name and last initial, along with your occupation and a photo, if you wish.

Rick,

I just wanted to write in to say thank you for all of your tips and links, which helped my wife and I book a 12-day trip for us and our one-year-old to London, Copenhagen, and Malmo for $2089.09. Here is the breakdown of what we did and the discounts we received:

  • British Airways: My wife and I have been using this card for years now and have racked up a lot of points, often hitting their $30,000 threshold for a free companion ticket. That being said, in August they were having a half-the-points sale so we ended up booking our tickets (departing LAX) during that sale and convinced a manager to allow us to use the companion ticket as well.
  • Therefore, for 46,800 frequent flier miles and the companion ticket we received two round-trip tickets in premium economy and a crib on the flight for our son.
  • The taxes and airport fees ended up being $1257.71, but this flight normally would cost $3404.50 per British Airway’s website.
  • Hyatt Hotels: Based upon the link from your website, both my wife and I opened a Hyatt Hotel credit card and received two free nights (four in total) after we each spent $1000 on the credit card, which wasn’t a problem as we normally put all of our expenses on cards to receive the points.
  • Each card had a $75 annual fee ($150 total), but that got us a four-night stay at the Hyatt Regency in London.
  • The cost of the hotel would have been $2365.52 if we booked the hotel though Hyatt, so these credit cards saved us just under 94%.
  • Hot Wire: For our stay in Copenhagen, we couldn’t find any hotels that had a rewards credit card with the exception of Hilton, but it’s next to the airport and we needed to use the Hilton Points for Malmo.
  • Booked four nights in a four-star room for $681.38, which breaks down to $127 per night and tax of $173.38.
  • If we had booked this hotel though the hotel directly, it would have cost $1651.28, which is over a 58% savings.
  • Hilton Hotels: My wife and I used the link from your blog to sign up for Hilton Honors credit cards, which provided us with 50,000 miles each after we spent $750 on the cards ($1500 total).
  • We booked three nights at the Hilton Malmo for 102,000 points (I obtained the additional miles needed from e-Rewards).
  • There was no annual fee for this credit card so the normal cost for this hotel, $598.31, was 100% discounted.

Overall, if we had paid for these items individually we would have spent $8019.61 for this trip. But with all of the deals, we ended up saving 74%.

Thank you for your help.

Jeremy

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Carson as Carnac the Magnificent

Carnac the Magnificent was a recurring comedic role played by Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. One of Carson's most well known characters, Carnac was a "mystic from the east" who could psychically "divine" unseen answers to unknown questions. The character was taken from Steve Allen's essentially identical "Answer Man" segment, which Allen performed during his tenure as The Tonight Show's host in the 1950s.[1] The Carnac character and routine also closely resemble Ernie Kovacs' "Mr. Question Man."[2][3][4][5]

As Carnac, Carson wore a large feathered turban and a cape. The character would emerge from behind the show's curtain accompanied by Indian music, and make his way towards the desk, where he would invariably stumble and lose his balance. On one memorable occasion, which was frequently rebroadcast on anniversary shows, Carson's desk had been surreptitiously replaced with a lightweight balsa-wood version. This allowed Carson to trip and smash right through it.

anon on Chicago DO we had hoped for September and the Hyatt but they wanted $44 for lunch plus tax and tip. That ain't gonna happen. We will announce as soon as we can

Ugh, I hope there aren't any more airline mergers! It's nice when there's a broad variety of US Airlines to get new credit cards for :)

Also, I like your blog, and your information, but I feel like recently a lot of your posts have had almost like a… pissed off or cranky attitude in them. I have seen you get some backlash from other bloggers and FT, but don't give them what they want and be an angry blogger. Just continue to do your thing.

Thanks FGT – you're the original and always my favorite. You speak in plain language, for regular folks like me. You've guided me to my first first class flights (yes, I'm hooked now), and helped me along the way to accumulating over 1 million miles.

Best wishes to you and yours for the new year.

    12. FTG will continue to be one of the 1st sites I read every morning. Thanks for a great 2011 Rick!

To #9 you add, established bloggers promoting CC referrals much harder. I have seen a dramatic increase in "cc" referral posts by especially Lucky, Brian K and even Gary L since the Chicago DO in October. Did the coin drop for all of them at the same time?

rick: anon is right. You have no right to put what you want in your blog posts. The blog clearly exists solely to meet anon's desires and needs. I must respectfully demand you give anon a 100% refund. :)

Is the Chicago Mega Do going to be October 12- October 14, 2012 at the Elk Lodge? I missed this year's Mega Do and would love to go next year.

  • Mommy Points

I vote for the seminars to be a bit earlier in October so that there will still be time for everyone to get in good on the Grand Slam! ;) Happy New Year to the FTG crew.

9 seems a bit mean-spirited, Rick, especially considering that basically every major blog, including yours, feeds off the others. What distinguishes one from the other is the "spin" they put on content that's widely available, and the expertise of each blogger. If someone comes along with expertise and a unique spin, more power to 'em…except that they siphon off your referral revenue, which I suspect is your reason for writing 9.

Thank you so much for your generous blog. I appreciate the information you share and enjoy your sense of humor and writing style. I am going through a difficult divorce and losing access to my husband's airline and hotel status. Although that's minor in comparison to the ending of a marriage, it helps to have a site like this so that I can begin to do it on my own. Thanks for helping me become independent.

    George Smart,

    1) Wikipedia infringes the copyright of Johnny Carson. They use a picture from The Tonight Show under copyright by NBC without permission, claim fair use (17 USC § 107), but then ask for donations of 20 Million USD every year with only 95 employees, threatening to use ads if they don't get it. That is NOT a non-profit.
    2) Since Johnny Carson has passed away, FTG's top 10 predictions are overruled, because he never received a call from the character (under copyright for a commercial use on his blog that is not a parody).
    3) FTG knows what a copy-cat travel blog is, he's one of them
    4) FTG is an LLC now; however, his business will collapse because he is not financially educated. The reason is FTG's LLC is not part of the 1 percent.
    5) The European Union will collapse.
    6) SOPA will pass and be signed into law, and FTG will cry foul. But then those with copyrights, a monopolistic exclusive right, can the kick FTG in his fat ass with the point of [our] boots really hard.

Enough of the "free blog, I'm famous" bullshit.

And finally, if there is going to be a merger, it will be a mid-size airlines like Alaska Air with Frontier Airlines. Only then will American even consider Alaska after bankruptcy.

Not Delta and Alaska, Howie has his head up his ass which is nothing new.

Yes, yes, fine – but what we all REALLY want to know is, when will the easy 50,000 mile offer for the new United Explorer card with a reasonably low spend going to be available for non-elites? That's the first big item I'm looking for in 2012!

  • FrugalTravelGuy

Anon: I wish I knew. Last I heard was first quarter

  • Anonymous

Honestly, it appears that your blog is turning into a copy cat blog too (e.g., publishing deals of the day from various other bloggers). Your original content continues to decrease.
