UPDATE: I got lots of requests and Mike Z got upgraded YVR-DEN and waitlisted DEN-ORD I also got a request from a member of our military flying international end of the month and I'm saving the last one for him. Thanks alls and I just wish I had a 20 SWU's to fulfill all the requests.
Thanks for emailing me
I got my last run-around from United Airlines last week. When I called them in December about extending my system-wides in 2012, I was told that it would gladly be done for me -- just call back in January 2012 to have them extended until December of 2012.
But when I made the call last week, I was told a new story. As I had not re-qualified for 1K in 2012, they would not extend them. If they'd told me that back in December when I first called, I could have used them. I had eight people flying to Hawaii in December and could have used them to upgrade somebody -- somehow, some way.
They are now available for the asking. If you're using them internationally, the fare class MUST be W or higher and upgrade space must be available. If you don't know your fare class or if upgrade space is available, please don't even ask as the email will be overwhelming. A better use would be something domestically that we can get done easily, preferably to a member of the armed services or for somebody who has never flown in first class before.
Send me an email at rick@frugaltravelguy.com after you've checked to see if my United system-wides can be used to sponsor an upgrade for your itinerary, which flies before January 31, 2012, and I'll get it done for you today. First come first serve and please be sure you have checked all the right boxes.

Rick, I sent you an email. Thanks for the generous offer. - Bill
I'm flying to Guam from the East Coast US in one week to start a new job. Unfortunately, while flight from IAD-NRT is United it's booked through Continental. And in Continental it shows that miles aren't available for use as upgrades. So my guess is that there's no availability for a systemwide upgrade either!
Very generous, Rick.
Assuming you had requalified, am surprised they would have extended them out that far. I extended 1 SWU for only a month and that was a big deal.
I hope you can rockstar it out and find a service wo/man who can use this for a super-long-haul international itinerary or find someone who normally wouldn't get to fly in a fancy cabin and really appreciate it. Please keep up the good work.
Hey Rick -
I sent you an email. Thanks for the extremely generous offer!
Cheers,
Mike
RIck,
I just wanted to say thanks- even though others were selected (and those military folks flying internationally are a better choice), I'm still grateful that you considered us.
Thanks again,
Scot
