Posted by Monday, February 06, 2012, No Comments

I got a nice note from Jamie at Hyatt Public Relations last week regarding their first quarter promo. In addition there is also a secondary bonus above and beyond the details below if you pay with your Hyatt credit card.

Jamie also suggested that I could giveaway some Hyatt points to readers so we will do just that. She has provided 66,000 Hyatt points to readers and we will do a random draw for 3 winners of 22,000 Hyatt points each. Just comment today with your first name and last initial and the hotel where you would spend your 22,000 Hyatt points. NO duplicate entries and entries must be received by midnight tonight Eastern time. I’ll use random.org to pick the winners

Do you have any idea what 75K points are worth?

75k points are worth where you really want to go. Jason, I hope in true frugal spirit, you were able to check into the beautiful military resort, Hale Koa, for an incredibly low price!

75k pts can get me so many $30 + 1600 starpoints award nights at a cat 1/2

Why are you endorsing this? This isn't a Sunday success story, it's people like this (who won't take more than 5 minutes to learn) that make the other Sunday success stories possible.

He called a week before his departure for capacity controlled seats and when none were available his first thought was "screw them"?

    Yeah okay buddy

I think you could have gotten much better value for those SPG points. It doesn't really matter, though, as long as you're happy. Memories are worth a lot more than points.

I agree.. I would have spent $900 and held on to the 75K! OR…why didn't you transfer 55K over to Hawaiian? They would have given you 10K as a bonus. Then you could have booked award tickets on Hawaiian for 7.5K each (supersaver).

He exchanged them at a value of 1.2c/mile (or 1c/mile if counting the 20% transfer bonus). Definitely could have done better by booking international first/biz, but it wasn't completely horrible. Nice to know about the SPG booking option, I wasn't aware of that.

The way I read your story was instead of paying $900 for the intra-island flights, you used 75,000 SPG points, giving you a value of 1.2 cents for each starpoint. I would value these points at least twice that, so a really poor use of the points. These could have been much better used for hotel stays or simply transferring them to airline programs.

  • Travel and Credit

This just boils down to what's best for the individual user. I would never use 75k SPG points for $900 of flights, but I also don't have a family to support so it's easier for me to make purchases like that. That said, man the hotel options with 75k points that could have been had instead… Heck, nights & flights!

Wow, people seem really upset about this post. He ended up with what he wanted, so I say it's a win!

I myself am new to this process and I am trying to book two weeks in Rome on all points. I would be interested to know what mistakes I'm making when booking hotels and flights.

Can the title of this post please be changed to "Sunday Failure Story"? Yikes, terrible use of SPG pts IMHO.
