Not on My Dime: Lightning Strikes Twice

Pic Sara took of our plane on descent

As eccentric crazies in this travel game we’re typically organized (to some degree).  We use tools like AwardWallet to track our points and miles, KVSTool and ExpertFlyer to make sure we’re getting the most from those miles, and CreditSesame, CreditKarma, and Quizzle as a free way to keep track of our credit scores.

Our families give us weird looks, but its ok … they’ll happily reap the benefits from our crazy.  It works until you forget about someone.  Someone that missed United 1K by 1500 EQM, or someone that has never had a credit card … and is a victim of identity theft.  The former was fixed with a quick discussion and education of all of the benefits they were missing out; rest assured she’s made United 1K three years straight now … the latter, is my current challenge.  Here goes …

Last week and this week I’m working from home (yay!)   Sara is out on the road and I’m home with our pup.  Last weekend I had an uneventful flight up to Massachusetts to see family and friends (I hadn’t been in almost a year) and stayed at my parents.  We opted Saturday night to head out to some fine international cuisine at The Olive Garden (insert laughs).

View from our seats at altitude

My brother told stories of his three month trip to Japan (I sent him over using 50k AA miles in business class on JAL flight 1 & 2 using a promo they had in the fall), and my mother chimed in saying she wanted a credit card to get her 50k points.  Last year I got her and my stepfather 30k SPG each and they’re hooked.

The plan when we got home was to pull credit for my mom, stepfather (who was convinced his score was higher than my mothers), and two younger brothers.  My mom, stepfather, and youngest brother were all fine.  My other brother has no checking account, no credit cards, and no debt … here come the problems.

Our first attempt to get a credit score was through CreditSesame, but they were unable to retrieve a report.  CreditKarma asked a bunch of questions that made no sense in the verification process and we couldn’t figure it out (I bet you can figure out where this is going …), and Quizzle was much the same.

The final thing was to go to TrueCredit and do a pull from there.  Much of the same and in the end we can only get the report mailed to us at an address that we’ve never seen before … yup, he’s a victim of identity theft.

To add insult to injury, my brother suffers from a mental disability.  Each of these calls to different credit agencies, and visit to the police department will have someone else in the family having to verify their identity.  Hopefully we’ll have some progress within the week.  I’ll be posting a full update along with all the steps we’re taking to get through this and resources we’re using.

About a decade ago the same thing happened to my mother, except it was much easier for her to get to the bottom of it all as she had an established record.  Apparently lightning can strike twice to a family.

I pay for each six month term at Western Governors University – it's currently just shy of $3000 per term. Goes on my credit card just fine, no transaction fee required.

I paid a $6000 tuition bill in December. Just like charging anything else.

i went to Auburn for a year, and we were able to pay for it on credit card with no fee there. but i transfered to Ohio State, and we can't do it here, nor can any of my siblings at other colleges like Michigan or Duke or Minnesota. it just depends on the college i guess.

It depends on colleges. The one I went to charges an astronomical fee, but the several that my friends go to do not have a fee. Last one was about $3,300, and it was on last Thursday (2/23). I have one or two more to come. I am putting them to the US Airways-Barclay Mastercard. No fee. Easy way to meet minimum spend or earn miles. All I owe is a dinner for my friends.

I paid tuition for my wife and son at the local community college (Arizona) with my Chase Sapphire Preferred card last year and used other cards in previous years. Never a fee and a great way to bump up my spend and hit spend when needed.

I'm a grad student at Utah State. A couple years ago Visa transactions (with a fee) were discontinued. However I found out last fall that I can make Amex payments online only without a fee.

Yes it can be done, we did it last year. But as others have said, I'm sure it depends on the school.

No fees for Visa, MC or Amex at our small private college in Northern California. In fact, last year, in addition to using various credit cards, I paid $6200 using 62 $100 Amex gift cards redeemed after the Suntrust/Delta deal.

I went to South University in Savannah, GA and I was able to charge tuition there without a problem for four years.

I'm a grad student at Tulane. Paid $2000 this semester, no fee. I used a Visa card in the accounts receivable office. I believe there was a fee if charged online but the lady explained that for a "swipe" no fees apply.
However, for Amex, no fees apply both online and swiped.

I'm a grad student at a SUNY school and have been paying ~$13k per semester for the last 4 years on various CC (Visa/MC only), even though I have loans for tuition. They just get credit to my account and I get a refund check. Basically free points, and an easy way to hit spend thresholds.

$28K a year in daycare expenses at Kindercare…only accepts Discover Card. I know it's not college tuition, but it sure feels like it!

Rosalind Franklin allows, but passes on the 2.5% processing fee. :-( Too bad with all they charge for med school!

I currently attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and we are assessed a 2.75% fee for credit card transactions. However, my wife is taking a class at Parkland Community College in the same city and she isn't assessed any fee. The last University I attended changed their policy half way through, citing a $500,000+ yearly bill for credit card transaction fees — and this was a small university. I can't image the bill for a large school like the U of I.

In 09-10 I put $54,000 of tuition on my Delta Amex Platinum card at the University of Colorado for no fee, and got a bunch of bonus MQMs out of the deal too!

Brophy College Prep (Phoenix, AZ) takes my $15,000 per year easily once a month on any of my various Visa cards with no fee! Hopefully my son will find a great college that will do the same.

Northwestern University in Evanston, IL charges a 2.75% fee for MC/Visa/Amex payment online. I hadn't thought about the possibility of an in-person swipe like Anonymous at Tulane. Great find!

Duke University Graduate School does not allow you to pay any amount of tuition with a credit card. Even if willing to pay huge fees, it simply is not a possibility.

It sucks, as that is our main expense right now, and the entirety of the tuition has to be paid with cash/loans. :(
