This may not be the world’s greatest deal but for summer European travel this is a steal now. EWR – DUS on LH for $667. I found it on Travelocity 7/16 – 7/23 and a flexible search shows others days available too. Don’t forget to log into the Ultimate Rewards portal first. You get 2 additional miles per $ so you easily get 4.28 points per dollar using your Sapphire Preferred (or pay with AMEX gold and get both UR points and MR points)

A new way to do spend/get points on CC presented exclusively here for FTG users (if its already now known).
Car insurance- set it up for automatic withdrawal from bank account since most companies give you 5% discount for doing it. Before the withdrawal date, call the company/agent and pay the bill by CC. You just got points while getting automatic setup discount. Don’t let them store CC #.
Now, hold this insurance every time you are out of town/country for more than a week or two. Most companies refund you the rest of the amount directly in your bank account. When you come back, turn it on and pay again by CC.

YMMV, done it a few times personally.

Hold? As in my car has no comprehensive coverage while I’m gone? No thanks. And my insurance company does automatic billing to a credit card. I haven’t seen a discount for either this or from my checking account(which I used to use).

Deal of the day: about the Daily Getaway deals, the hotel point offerings can serve as a great way to prep up for the US Airways Grand Slam promotion (assuming it returns).

Last year, I got in on 112,000 Choice Privileges points for $430.20 (0.38cpp), 80,000 Priority Club points for $480.60 (0.6cpp), and 112,000 Wyndham Reward points for $315 (0.28cpp).

Used many of the points on expensive cities such as NYC and D.C. (16,000 Wyndham points for Wingate NYC Midtown ($44.8/night!), 25,000 Choice points for Comfort Inn Times Square ($95/night!), etc). But most importantly, I had enough points left over in each program to do point transfers to US Airways as “cheap” and simple hits during the Grand Slam promo! I did not know about the Grand Slam promo when I bought the points, but when it came, I was pleased to find another valued way to use those hotel points!

Also, the 80,000 Priority Club points I bought gave me Platinum status throughout 2012, which I am currently taking advantage of in San Diego. Booked 2 Queen Beds room and was upgraded to a Executive Suite with separate living room that has 2 pullout couches for the kids for 5 nights! The room is massive! 4 times larger than a standard room judging from the floor plan. Status certainly has its perks!

Bottom line, definitely take advantage of the Daily Getaway deals!

Use carpool.com to buy discount gift cards and then use them through the Ultimate Rewards shopping portal. For example, I purchased a Kohl’s gift card at a 15% discount, used a 20% coupon code I found online, and recieved a $10 certificate for a future purchase because my item was more than $50. Plus I received 10 points per dollar through the portal. Keep in mind that at least a small portion of the purchase must be on an UR credit card. And, I got free shipping because item was over $50!
