Last week we offered up 10,000 miles to gather some great examples of how to use AA miles in a non-traditional manner.
About 100 great ideas later through comments, twitter, and facebook here are the winners:
First Prize (7,000 AA miles): Joseph F. (JFK) – I was down to my last 40K and used them to the fullest. JFK-LAX-LHR. NY to London via L.A. (yes, it’s possible!) for 20K miles. I attended a wedding in L.A., spent a few wonderful days in London then took the Eurostar to Paris for the weekend. The return was CDG-MIA-JFK . Paris to NY via Miami (also for only 20K) to visit my granny for 2 days. All the flights were on AA, last November.
Second Prize (3,000 AA miles): Hao Tran (twitter) – Getting to LHR: JFK-SIN on CX first, then HKG-LHR on CX biz. Used AA citi to save 10% miles.
Third Prize (XL AA t-shirt & 2 Flyertalk bag tags): Lance Bjerke (Facebook) – Nontraditional use of AA miles: before I got into travel hacking I only had a few hundred miles in my AA account during college. I figured I would never redeem them for a flight any day before they expired so I used them to get a local newspaper subscription so that I could get the Sunday paper without having to “pay” and then use the coupons to save money on my groceries.
Joseph, Hao, and Lance please contact howie@frugaltravelguy.com so I can get you your miles. Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories. I know I learned a few things, I hope y’all did too.
