10,000 AA Mile Giveaway – Best Nontraditional Use of American Airlines Miles

I’ve got 10,000 American miles to give away. First prize 7,000 miles … Second prize 3,000 miles … Third prize an AA XL t-shirt and 2 Flyertalk bag tags.

To win, tell us how you’ve successfully used AA miles in a non-traditional manner. That is anything other than using miles to get a round-trip ticket on American Airlines. Some examples:

Flew AA from Boston to Los Angeles, then Qantas to Australia and then Spain. Finally back home on Iberia OR used AA miles to book a rental car through AA’s portal and saved $300 on a rental using only 8500 miles OR used AA miles to fly one-way from Chicago to Miami to catch a cruise.

Let’s come up with some additional everyday ways we can use AA miles.

Your use must be something that can be done today. There doesn’t need to be availability on a specific flight, but this has to be something that someone can go and book. Flying on the Concorde just isn’t an option.

So we did a bucket list item, Brussels & Egypt on AA miles last year for 20,000 miles and $500 from RDU, and then ended up getting like 15,000 miles back.

What we did: We got a (one way) reward ticket (20,000) miles from RDU to BRU, and spent 3 days in Brussels. Then we purchased a one way ticket from BRU to Egypt, returning to RDU through British Air (It was all American steel, except the first flight.) Cost: $500. Spent four days in Cairo, and loved it!

Because we paid for our ticket on return, we ended up getting like 15,000 miles back. Even better, AA was running a promotion on hotels purchased with miles at the time, so we stayed at a hotel near RDU the night before and after our trip, for almost no miles, and they gave us free parking to boot.

My sister and I started a tradition to go on a “sister’s trip” every year. I decided to go back to school during the 4th year of doing this and became a very poor student. I made our trip to Europe work that year by using AA miles for our hotels (and saved more money by eating at local markets and splitting more “fancy” meals with my sister). So glad I was able to work around my very sad bank account instead of skipping the sister’s trip that year.

I once used 25,000 miles to upgrade a coach to business on a flight from Chicago to Tokyo. I paid less than $300 for the coach ticket to save 25,000 miles for a business award which requires 50,000 miles. Not bad I guess.

Nick H (DFW) : I used 4k AA miles to book a full size car for my sister while she and her family of 4 were in FLL over a holiday when prices were more expensive. It ended up saving her over $100 from what she was originally going to pay, so I thought the cost of miles was justified. Redeeming miles through AA website for Car Rentals or Hotel stays can offer great value under certain circumstances.

My wife and I flew from SYR-ORD-JFK-BCN. Stayed four days in Barcelona, took the train to Cap d’Agde, spent 2 weeks with my parents, got a rental car with miles at the Montpellier Airport and drove via Carcassonne to the Dordogne where we rented a room at a bed&breakfast. Then we drove the car to Paris and flew CDG-ORD-SYR. All with AA miles we blew close to 240k miles but it was totally worth it.

Took one epic trip from Los Angeles-London(stop)-Lusaka on BA First Class, the did an open jaw from Johannesburg-Bombay on Jet Airways Business Class, and back from BOM-LAX via LHR on BA First Class using 235K AA Miles. Back about 10 years ago in the hayday of bumping, my family of 4 flew Des Moines to Cancun on miles. We were offered $500 each to bump off and stay in Dallas for a few more hours, so we did that. Then they offered two of us bumps again. We weren’t able to do the second bump (because of the next day’s activities in DSM), but we still ended up basically flying a family of four to and from Cancun for free. Now that’s a good use of AAdvantage miles!

Traveled to SFO from LAX on American using 53,900 Miles + $475.37. This was a package through American Airlines Vacations which allowed me, my wife, and our then 2-year old son to get RT airfare PLUS 3 nights at the Triton hotel right next to the gates of Chinatown. The hotel was great and conveniently located to just about everywhere we wanted to go.

We had a great time and would recommend using AA Vacations.

So this may not be too non-traditional….but in our marriage (just celebrated 28 years!) it was the first real vacation we’ve taken since having kids. So AA miles got us first class seats (never flown first class….so that part was non-traditional too) to Kauii and it was quite wonderful. A great use of 140 K miles!

AA miles are one of the best mile currencies out there to redeem for hotels. Normally one gets around 1cent/mile value with hotels. However,sometimes they are an incredible bargain. Hat tip to Loyalty Traveler for this (

If you are willing to put a little time and effort into looking for deals on redemption options you can find some good ones, even for as little as 10,000 AA miles…you can stretch out a great vacation

As an example (right now this is bookable) you can book 17 nights in Mexico City at Mision Patzcuaro, a four star rated place, according to AA. That is a cost of only 595 miles/night! 17 nights from July1st through July 17th will cost you a total of 9500 AA miles. If you value your AA miles at 1.75 cents/mile as i do then this redemption would cost you $10.41/night!

I paid for the flight (from MCI) which is traditional, but didn’t have any cash for a hotel. Turns out you can pay for hotel nights with AA miles. I spent 3 nights at the Stratosphere, and had a blast in Vegas!

I able to secure two roundtrip tickets on Air Tahiti Nui (AA partner — call AA to ticket) in business class LAX-PPT-LAX (62,500 AA miles + $2.50 taxes and $25.00 phone ticketing fee per one-way ticket).

I was also able to transfer AA miles into Hilton points (at a decent 3:5 ratio — transfer still available, though rumored to be phasing out soon) and booked 7 nights at the Hilton Bora Bora Nui on points! While I would generally save AA miles for great flight deals on partner awards, I was quite short of Hilton points and the exchange ratio was/is not bad for redeeming at the Bora Bora Nui. Over $12,000 in flights/hotels for my honeymoon for some AA miles (largely racked up through credit card signups following your blog’s advice) and ~$110. Many thanks FTG!!!

My most memorable trip on AA was using 25,000 AA roundtrip miles to go from SNA to SHV for a job interview. Shrevport is one of the smaller cities where flights can be pretty expensive. A typical roundtrip coach ticket is about $850 to $1000. Didn’t have much to spend cuz funds were getting depleted with all the flying for interviews. Then I started to look for hotels. Most of hotels in Shrevport that were decent costed at least $100/night. Instead, I booked one at Sam’s Town Hotel/Casino. They treated me like royalty. Their concierge service picked me up from airport. Got a huge room w/ a huge bed, jacuzzi, flat screen tv, etc. I walked around city a bit and had dinner in their buffet. Played some blackjack. Next day got a taxi to job interview and back. Some of the nicest people are in Shrevport. Then taxi drove me back to hotel and the concierge service took me airport. Total for hotel was about $50. Such a steal! If anyone wants to go to Shrevport, AA miles are the best. Easily get 3-4 cents/mile value on coach.

I’ve used AA miles to book hotels and it’s worked out well. Last summer a last-minute trip to Rome came up and I wanted to stay at the InterContinental De La Ville. I didn’t want to spend my Priority Club points so I checked how many AA miles it would cost and it was quite reasonable.

This summer, AA award nights at the IC in Rome are going for 18,800 miles per night for a Classic room. But, what I love is you can also book a range of room categories or book breakfast with your room.

At AA, you can book junior suites, executive junior suites, and even penthouse suites (albeit at 192,700 miles per night!) at the IC Rome.

Well, I’m not sure how non-traditional it is (or isn’t), but my sis and I took our parents to their first cruise. We flew everyone to FL in domestic First (a first for the parents). We planned the trip close to the trip date, so the cost to fly there was higher than average. We didn’t have enough miles to fly everyone back in First, so I booked the flight in First for everyone except for myself (in coach). I paid out of pocket for my one way return back (expensive for one way, but I’d figured I can rack up some miles and earn some eqm as well).

I bought one more sticker, and put myself on the upgrade list at airport check-in. Unfortunately, as a mere gold elite member at the time, my upgrade didn’t go through (many on the standby list too). I ended up sitting next to a young kid who was flying by himself, and it was a very pleasant flight. Believe it or not, I do like booking one way awards for its flexibility.

For 3 people, 20,000 AA miles each for one way coach from msy-bda-edi (New Orleans-Bermuda-Edinburgh) with a layover in Bermuda and one way return for 50,000 AA miles from bcn-mbj-msy (Barcelona-Montego Bay-New Orleans) with layover in Jamaica. The flights from Europe to the islands were on british air and the flights from the island to New Orleans were on American metal. Also, just booked msy-lax-nan for 37,500 aa miles each way with a stay for 5 nights at Fiji Intercontinental on pointsbreak for cost of $30/night this July.

We had 80k+ miles left over from last year’s Aadvantage citi card bonus. I always look for ways to redeem these miles when they have a promotion. When we were looking for an opportunity to redeem these miles, the AA + JAL promotion was going on – which offered a 40% discount on redemption to certain destinations in Asia. Thanks to FTG’s Deal of the Day posts - http://www.frugaltravelguy.com/2012/04/deal-of-the-day-american-airlines-aadvantage-4.html . We redeemed 80k miles for both of us together and flew to Singapore. And from there we flew a cheap low cost carrier and visited India. All in all, the trip saved us tons of money and miles!

Frequent flyers can apply AAdvantage miles to a one year membership in American’s Admirals Club. This non-traditional use of AA miles is better value the higher one’s elite tier status is with American.

When my wife was pregnant last year with our daughter (first child) we planned a last hurrah from NYC to San Diego. We were spending 5 nights there, but hotels in San Diego were very expensive, and we wanted something nice. Due to AA’s generosity with their credit card promotions last year (100,000 mile signups with spending $10K), we were able to use miles (using AA’s Car and Hotels) for 3 nights at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, and 2 nights at L’auberge Del Mar, all for 60K total in miles. This was a great deal for us, and something we could never have afforded without AA miles. Although some might say that we’d have been better off saving those miles for a business/first class ticket, we just wanted a nice vacation which we would remember for years to come, and AA helped us achieve that goal. Our daughter is now 1, and we hope to show her the same experiences we’ve seen using miles and points.

We recently started a business and needed to get half way across the country to a convention. Driving wasn’t an option for us. We sell mostly t-shirts.

You would think checking bags with enough shirts to sell would be prohibitively expensive but we used 100,000 AA miles (gained from CC bonuses we learned from your site) for two tickets to get from TPA to DFW in first class which allows you to check 3 bags per person. 5 bags of shits and 1 bag for our booth setup. We also stuffed some stuff in our carry-ons, lol.

I know using 100,000 miles to fly domestic first class probably wasn’t a great redemption for most people but for a new business trying to keep costs low and get brand exposure, $10 out of pocket was a smashing success!

Lane K. (DFW) This winter we used AA miles to fly my parents, partner, and myself to BKK on CX. We were able to obtain 2 F seats and 2 J seats on the same flights. Those that say it can’t be done….keep reading. This was a trip of a lifetime as none of us have the financial means to buy coach tickets on this routing, nonetheless First and Business tickets. It was an AMAZING experience aboard Cathay Pacific. They really have a product that the US airlines can’t touch. Here’s the ironic part: None of us fly AA frequently and have no status. I might buy 1 or 2 domestic coach tickets per year on AA. We do however have excellent credit and have used the techniques obtained on this website to do credit card churns and we charge everything possible. We flew DFW-ORD-HKG-BKK and return. We used the money we saved to stay at amzing resorts in Thailand and flew Air Asia domestically. We save our miles for 2 years, booked 7 months in advance, and made it happen! My first award redemption was for my daughter’s first international trip to Japan in February. Using all my AA miles (and having to purchase some – I know, I hear the collective Gasps and shame on me!) I had enough miles to take my family on vacation to Japan on Japan Airlines in first class!! (I had to prove to those doubting Thomas’ that all the reading and scouring the internet to learn about earning miles, redemption values, etc. has been worth it!) I did it!! We were able to take advantage of all the first class lounges during our trip because of our booking class. It was remarkable how wonderful everything was! Although, it’s not untraditional to fly using your miles, it was new to me that I could use the miles flying on Japan Airlines using the AA miles and AA representatives to book it. I think the taxes were $47 a person. BARGAIN!! Sometimes there are special discount mileage fares available for miles just look at http://www.aa.com. Flying on Japan Airlines was a wonderful experience and first class to boot. Also I didn’t know that even if you can only book economy tickets, often first class tickets become available closer to the departure date. I booked when I could all 3 in economy and then moved us up one by one as seats became available. I called every other day for the first 2 weeks, then a rep said that I needed to call every day. I was not charged for changing from economy to first class. I ended up getting all the seats in first class! I didn’t realize that miles were so valuable. Had I only started earlier…. I hate to think of all the mileage opportunities I have missed. And had I waited until now to go, I could have received 10% back because of the redemption bonus using the Citi AA Card – oh well, I am ready for our next trip!

My wife and I used 440,000 AA miles to redeem two oneworld business class tickets. We started our trip in January this year and by year’s end we will have each clocked about 49,300 miles on 16 flights operated by 7 oneworld carriers. Our itinerary is Cairns to Sydney (Qantas), Sydney to Singapore (BA), Singapore to Tokyo (JAL), Tokyo to London (BA), London to Johannesburg (BA), Johannesburg to Madrid (was Iberia, now BA), Madrid to Rome (Iberia), Rome to Helsinki (Finnair), Helsinki to Beijing (Finnair), Beijing to Delhi (Cathay), Delhi to Hong Kong (Cathay), Hong Kong to Toronto (Cathay) and finally Toronto to Quito (American). it’s been great fun so far and it made sticking with AAdvantage to earn all those miles worthwhile!

Matt H. (aka Muerl, BOS) I am not 100% you can still do this, but I will explain it anyway. I turned 60k AA miles into 100,000 HHonors Points. My wife and I used these to stay at a string of Hiltons across South East asia on our honeymoon. We were on the road for 3 months, so interspersing fancy stays with upgrades and executive lounge access from my gold status, helped us remember it was our honeymoon. We stayed in the Hilton Orchard Rd in Singapore with free Champagne and chocolates for our honey moon. We stayed in a suit as the spectacular Double Tree Kuala Lumpur with amazing views of the Petronas Towers. Later we stayed at the Hilton at the Hanoi Opera House, with lovely views in the heart of the old City. All thanks to AA miles.

Granville T. (SYD-CDG). For all of us living downunder one of the biggest problems is to find a comfortable (financial and other) flight to all those great places in Europe. Courtesy of 60000 AA miles I have booked a trip of a lifetime from Sydney to Paris with an overnight stay in Japan (Tokyo). That means a daytime departure with exotic Japanese food (and sake) on JAL and a restful night near Narita. The next morning, after a Japanes breakfast in the Sakura Lounge, it’s a nice 11am flight to Paris via London with BA. There will be more than enough time in London to enjoy Champagne, and maybe a spa treatment in the Galleries Lounge, before a quick trip to Paris and time for an early night. I will certainly enjoy!
