Some are suggesting this incident is over. Personally I think it is just beginning. With United unilaterally cancelling everyone’s four mile ticket last night, the opportunity to file a claim for actions taken by United just began. I filed my claim as I want:
- A free trip to Hong Kong
- To get the issue settled for future reference
- To send United a wakeup call that unilateral action on their part is not sufficient reason to just let this go.
My position is simply this: When the DOT rules, I’ll abide by the decision without further question.
United has screwed this up royally from the moment they posted the four mile fare, through their first “unofficial announcement”, to their unilateral action of cancelling tickets they themselves issued without the courtesy of an email to anyone. I still have not received an email from United. I never saw the screens involved (somebody else booked the ticket for me). I do have a valid receipt issued by United.
I’ve been involved in mistake fares for the last 11 years; sometimes they are honored, sometimes they are not. This is just one mistake fare, that is all. And this game ain’t over til its over. When the DOT rules it is over for me and not before.
Others will take it further to civil action, count on it. We saw it with the previous mentioned LaQuinta deal and the plantiff won believe it or not after making 25 plus reservations. MM sued on the Catera Commerce disaster. That was his perogative under the American system. Let this run its proper course and that varies for each and every one of us. That is the game all of us play. Some just play harder than others.
