I got an email several weeks ago asking how my diet was going? Well, not well on the first one, but I’m back at it again with a new understanding about addictions, not only to food but miles and points as well.
I lost 30 pounds on the last diet then gained every single one of those pounds back again. Back to my new South Carolina doctor I went and he gave it to me straight. My family is obese, I don’t exercise, and I’ll fight my weight for the rest of my life. He suggested I get my stomach stapled or banded. Quite the shock as I walked out of the room.
Shannon was all against that idea and showed me a iPhone app called MyFitnessPal (free too) that helped my count calories and set a goal of 1.5 pounds weight loss per week. So far I’m down 17 pounds since June 27th. I realized in the last two months that I’m addicted to food as well. I seem to want to eat most when my belly is full. Go figure?? With the info and a decent calorie counting plan I hope to tame that addiction. It’s a tough when you need to eat everyday and I’ve developed empathy for those that struggle with their weight.
And now on to miles and points. Well I don’t need to add them everyday but I do need to keep myself under control. Katy and I have two different last names and two addresses. As such, we are loading up on AA miles for $24 per month with Bank Direct. We will be adding to our stable of INK cards with our next round of applications, and will continue to add an equal number of miles or hotel points using the current 5X category bonus. I’m concerned about my hunting for more. Here is a recent example.
I started reading Fatwallet and Slickdeals again looking for the super bargain that I can resell to recoup my acquisition costs and pocket the UR points when buying through the Ultimate Rewards Mall. I recently found a $129 printer that I could buy for $50 including taxes shipped. “How many do I buy?” is the addict in me screaming in my ear. I’m listening and listening to that voice. Thank God the next step is checking out what the same printer sells for on eBay or Amazon. Is everybody selling these discounted printers or am I really getting a deal?? The price on Amazon was $63 and there were 57 available for sale. After I paid the selling fees and shipping I’d be lucky to break even and make 250 Ultimate Rewards points per printer purchased. (Staples is 5X this month x $50). 250 UR points may be worth $5 or a little more.
My next thought is buy just one for the house. Wait: I have a HP printer that I have had for years now that works just fine. I don’t need another printer. I purchased NONE and am proud of myself.
Miles and points are addicting and I am an addict. It is only through the steps I’ve been taught by those in the know that I am able to keep things under control. I needed that last verification of comparable sales prices to protect myself from myself. Thanks for all that have helped me along the way.
Now if those printers were $20 each, hmm??
