I was just minding my own business and saw a piece of junk mail from United and specifically their Magazines Award Center. The envelope suggested my miles were expiring in May of 2013????
“That can’t be…” I mused so opened it to find, in fact, another Mileage Plus account in my name with my correct address and a note indicating the account had a balance of 25,036. It was beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. I immediately jumped on the United Airlines phone tree, screamed “agent” into the phone at least 5 times during various recordings, until Happy Heather answered and did indeed confirm an account did exist with my name and the 25,036 mile bounty.
“Well lets transfer those to your main account” she said after additional verification, and my Christmas present was on the way to my account. It seems I opened a credit card back in 2011 without using my normal United number or something to that affect? I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever. Honestly I don’t. It’s hell to get old and confused like Uncle Leo does at times.
What a nice surprise and lesson to be learned. Read your junk mail. Sometimes it can pay off handsomely. I wonder how many miles I’ve thrown away without checking the mail completely? Live and learn.
Have you ever had miles fall from heaven? I’d love to hear your stories.
