Rick,
I wanted to send you a quick note to thank you for all of the hard work that goes into your blog! I returned last Monday from a 12-day trip to China that included round-trip first class airfare for less than $100 and six nights at Starwood Preferred Guest properties (booked with cash and points) for less than $300. Your blog originally inspired me to get into the points and miles game and it’s turned into a very rewarding hobby!
See link below: For fun I posted a few pictures from our international legs (AA187 ORD – PEK and UA850 PEK – ORD) on Flickr. After flying coach to Europe in 2009, flying first class was a BLAST and I can’t wait to do it again!

Thanks again for all you do!

Success Story Number Two

| Paris, France; photo by Andrew Ingersoll |
Hey Rick,
Back in January I purchased two tickets through Expedia.com to fly from Portland, OR, to London and then from Paris back to Portland. The trip was two weeks long. Other than having used Capital One “No Hassle Miles” for the past couple of years, I had no knowledge of how to “work the system,” so I was planning on paying for most of this trip out of pocket.
Thankfully another one of your readers got me hooked and, since July, I have signed up for multiple cards (SWA, Starwood, Hilton, the 2x Citi AA deal, and Chase Sapphire Preferred). I was careful to space out my inquiries and have so far avoided any meaningful harm to my credit.
The good news is that since booking the tickets in January, I was able to improve our financial condition for this trip quite a bit. I was able to cancel several accommodations and one car rental and re-book with miles/points. Since July I have also signed up for several frequent flier programs, one being United’s Mileage Plus. I updated my Expedia booking to include mine and my wife’s new United Mileage Plus numbers so we each netted 12,562 miles for the trip. This is something I would have naively left on the table.
I also took my brand new Chase Sapphire card with me on the trip and put $1500 in expenses that were going to go on the Cap One card. This gets me half way to the $3000 spend for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
The cherry on top has to be my retroactively calling a Hampton Hotel I had booked and giving them my Hilton HHonors number about three weeks before we stayed with them. Upon check-in at the Hampton, we were told we’d been upgraded to the regular Hilton. We were given an executive room with executive lounge access – all for the measly $90 I had paid for the discount Hampton room!

It took one hour to get my computer up and running this morning. It is so old that some of the keys are missing and I have so much junk on it, it is very temperamental. Once we got going things were ok but a few surprises.
I started with my Chase United Explorer app as a United 1K and all went well. I got the “we are reviewing you stuff” page which I expected. I decided to add the Business version for another easy 25K but the application would not load, so I had to go to another computer and it would not load there either? Finally I Googled United Explorer Business card and got an application completed. (pending as well)
The Amex Business Gold card went easy and just took a five minute phone call to verify my info. I was approved and will reveived 50,000 Membership Rewards points after completing the spend.
Next I jumped over to the Citi Thank You Preferred Card and got an instant approval. Hooray for Hollywood. 50,000 Thank You points
I then did my US Airways Debit card application for the 3000 miles and Grand Slam hit. That was a “we’ll let you know” as well? For a debit card???
Katy was next with surprising results. The Citi Premier Card pended her application as did the INK Bold card. The surprising change was that the United Explorer card no longer offered her a bigger bonus for having Premier status. She’ll have to wait and do the Explorer card in November when the increased promo comes back, we hope.
In place of the Explorer card we slipped in a Hawaiian Airlines Visa card from Bank of America for 35,000 Hawaiian miles which we will convert to 70K Hilton Honors points. It cost $79 but we had the room for the card application. It took a phone call to B of A but we got an approval on that one as well.
Total for sure haul this morning was 135,000 points putting us 5000 points or miles short of 1 MILLION for the year again. I have no doubt we’ll score that we need to reach our goal.

Dear Rick,
I became a bit of a reader of the Frugal Travel Guy back in May. My wife and I were traveling to Spain, Madrid, etc., and I stumbled upon your site while browsing the web one evening. Anyway, after returning home (Tallahassee, FL) in July, I decided to get serious about miles/points. I always was, or so I thought, but I had limited everything to Delta, American Express and Capital One. These served us well as we managed to keep my wife at the lowest Delta Medallion level with a combination of 10K bonus MQMs (Medallion Qualifying Miles), sometimes an additional 10K, and some actual flying. Anything else came from using our Capital One Mastercard when abroad (no foreign fees) or when a business did not accept AMEX cards.
I should have known life could only get better! We are now in the process of meeting spending thresholds on Starwood Preferred Guest’s (SPG) card for 30k points, the Chase Sapphire Preferred for 50k points, AMEX Gold Preferred for 75k with a bump-the-bonus, Hilton AMEX for 20k, and CitiBank Hilton for 40k. Not all are mega-deals but we’ll continue to learn.
The spending threshold tip is: Pay you property taxes with your card if that’s allowed in your location. Our tax collector office accepts AMEX, Mastercard, and Discover and adds 2.5% for the use of the card. Granted, this will cost me — $100.00 extra — but with $4000 in taxes I’ll reach the threshold and get the points for the transaction on my SPG card. Additionally, by doing this I can charge my upcoming cruise on my Chase card and get double points there. If I used my SPG card for the cruise, no double points. Anyway, hopefully, this will be helpful to someone who needs to meet a spending threshold.
Love your site and the various “guest” contributors. I find Howie’s commentary especially useful due to his Savannah location and use of Delta. We have a similar situation in Tallahassee.

Katy’s Churn Results, Status Match with Skyteam, Nomadic Matt’s New Book, and the Amex Chat
Posted by Rick Saturday, March 19, 2011, No Comments
We’re getting the approvals on Katy’s three-card churn. The Bank of America Alaska Airlines card came through with a weak $5000 credit limit. Her lines of credit are usually larger than mine. Huh?
An Elite Status Match Opportunity with SkyTeam???
Thanks, Bert. This could be big for plenty of readers. It appears that Flying Blue is doing a status match to its current program level in another program. My status with Skyteam is zero, so this could help me as well if somebody can get all the particulars about a Skyteam membership.
Readers: What bennies will we get if we gain an increased status with Flying Blue? What might my United Airlines 1K frequent flier miles be comped to with Flying Blue, and how will that help me when flying Delta Airlines domestically?
Here is the link. Thanks again, Bert!
Nomadic Matt’s New Book Is Out
Designed for the younger, more frugal traveler who is willing to couch-share, hop on backpacker buses, etc, this is a terrific starting guide for the young and adventurous. I enjoyed the read very much. At just under $20, I’m sure you will save more than that with your first read through. Here is the link.
Amex Chat from Several Weeks Ago
Here is the American Express Chat that Matt talked about, re: when a new application can be made and when to expect the new sign-up bonus from Amex. This is not the same Matt as the book author above, but a fellow frugal traveler helping us all out. Thanks, Matt!
How I Book Hotel Rooms
Posted by Rick Thursday, March 17, 2011, No Comments
We all have our own method. I’ll try to describe mine step by step as I try a phantom booking in Indianapolis, Indiana, the night of April 13, 2011. I chose Indy because I have never been there, haven’t done any prior research, and wanted to see how long the process would take (about 35 minutes). Hotel location will be determined by public transportation and cost. My phantom meeting is downtown the next morning, with an evening departure that night. I’ll describe my methodology as I go. And remember I am a three-star kinda guy.
First, I’m opening some browser windows:
- Indianapolis Airport Official WebsiteKayak
- Biddingfortravel.com
- Tripadvisor.com
- SPG.com
- Priority Club.com
Step One is the airport website and ground transportation. I hate renting a car in a strange city for one meeting downtown, and have found that I can get an Express Bus for $7 each way. This information not only helps me get downtown, but it also opens up airport hotels and their shuttle buses back to the airport to catch the Express Bus downtown. Airport hotels are quite often cheaper than downtown hotels. I have that covered. Now it’s time to check out some prices.
Off to Kayak, which shows me that the least expensive, well-known, three-star chain hotel downtown is the Sheraton at $129 per night. The airport search shows rates of $87, $90, $93, and $119 for hotels with shuttles. I now have retail prices so let’s find the deal.
Off to biddingfortravel.com where page one shows accepted bids of $48 and $49 for higher rated downtown hotels and $39 for a Radisson airport hotel. I may just stay downtown if it’s only $10 more, go the night I arrive, and be downtown already in the morning for my meeting.
More work to do. I’d better do a Tripadvsior search on those three hotels to see if any of them are lemons. Since I’m a month out, I have plenty of time to bid on Priceline in the range of accepted bids, but I’d better have a back-up plan. Off to PriorityClub.com.
I’m looking for Pointsbreaks hotels at 5000 points per night and “glory be” the Crowne Plaza airport is a Pointsbreak hotel for that night. My search may be over. I could also check Hilton Pointstretchers and the Marriott discounted awards as well, but I find that the Priorityclub Pointsbreak is usually the best deal in town. I can get Priority club points for .6 ( six/tenths) of a cents each (that’s another article), so my hotel cost is now down to $30. The airport has a 24-hour shuttle to and from the airport. Tripadvisor gives it a solid thumbs up. I think I’m done and happy.
So what if I hadn’t found the Pointsbreak hotel? I could have gone with the Expedia Best Price match guarantee to take $50 off the retail rate of another hotel. The lowest retail rate was $87 for an airport hotel, so I could have got in at $87-$50=$37. Or I could have bid in the high $30s to low $40s for a room downtown or at the airport on Priceline. And if those ideas hadn’t found results, I would have checked SPG.com for a cash-and-points or all-points redemption with Starwood. It’s tough to beat that Pointsbreak deal, though, when you can find it.
Do a blog search for the Expedia Best Price Guarantee (10/15/10 blog post) and Priceline/ biddingfortravel.com (10/27/07 blog post) to refresh yourself on these two methods of hotel savings.
That was fun! Try it yourself with an unfamiliar city and see how you do.

Amex Shorted Katy’s SPG Sign Up Bonus
Posted by Rick Friday, September 17, 2010, 17 Comments
I’m wondering if anyone else got only 20K for the July 30K SPG new card bonus?
Katy’s account only had a 20,000 sign up bonus post and when I called them they told me that was the amount of the promotion. It was only the hottest SPG promo in years. We all knew it was 30K and many of you got 10K plus 30K on the business card.
I sent the secure message center a copy of their email to Katy dated 7/27 where it clearly states that if she cancels her old card, she would get the full 30K. I expect this to be an easy correction.
My account is still in doubt. I got a posting of 10K and 20K and believe that there is more to come as I did both personal and business cards. My next statement closing date is 9/18, so not long to wait.
Did anybody else get shorted?
Fare War Fare War Fare War Delta and United Airlines

Seems like the kids are fighting again and the hub cities are in play. Look for United flights and prices out of CVG, SLC and ATL and Delta flights our of SFO, IAD and maybe ORD.
Sub $200 roundtrips and Delta has already pulled thier fares so hurry.
