Special purpose cards are those that give us an excellent benefit or benefits, usually at an increased annual fee (which is often not waived). Unlimited lounge access, reimbursement for certain fees, credits when joining programs, and other fantastic benefits come with these cards … just at a cost. The value provided with these cards far outweigh the annual fees; if you use them. -Rick

Rick’s Review: If you are a frequent flyer that appreciates airline lounge access, the Platinum Card from American Express may be right up your alley. The $450 annual fee becomes a real bargain when you consider that the card grants you access to American, Delta, and US Airways airport lounges (a $300-400 value alone), $200 in incidental credit on your designated airline. (I chose American Airlines, bought $200 of electronic gift cards and received reimbursement within 3 days of purchase), and for international travellers, you also receive reimbursement for the Global Entry program which will speed your way through US Customs ($100 value). Just scan your passport and go for Global Entry members. You’ll receive 25,000 Membership Rewards points when you complete the required $2000 spend within 3 months of card activation. Another benefit is SPG Gold status which gives you bonus points on stays and late checkout. Membership Rewards points may have lost some of their value with the loss of several partners but the ongoing transfer bonuses with their remaining partners are at times: Outstanding. Add up all those benefits and you’ll see the Platinum Card from American Express is a bargain for the truly frequent flyer. Apply Now!
Here’s how I use this card: This card is in my wallet day in and day out, not so much for spending but access to lounges on three different airlines. I’m loving it.
