Airports are becoming more like shopping malls and amusement parks than just places to board your plane or transit to your next flight. Some airports are even looking more like small cities. You’ve probably passed through these airports and never knew the extent of the attractions and services offered. Here is just a sampling of what you might be missing:
A Thousand Butterflies, Free Movies, and a Four-Story Slide at Singapore’s Changi Airport
Don’t worry about being bored at Singapore’s Changi Airport; there plenty of activities to keep you occupied and entertained. There are two free-admission movie theatres, one in terminal 2 and one in terminal 3 and they’re open 24 hours a day.
If you feel more like racing down a giant slide, the airport has the tallest in the world at four stories tall. You can get a free one and a half story [email protected] ride at Basement Level 2. Also, for every $10 you spend at the airport, you will receive one free ride ticket to use from the top level.
If you’re looking for something a little more relaxing, you can stroll through one of the many gardens in the airport. There are many to choose from, including the Cactus Garden, the Sunflower Garden, the Enchanted Garden with its lights and sounds, the Orchid Garden with its Koi Pond; or you can intermingle with over a thousand butterflies at the terminal 3 Butterfly Gardens.
Say “I DO” Then Move into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
If you had enough money, you could live at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. There are sleeping chairs in a nice quiet area, a meditation center for all religions and certainly plenty to eat. When you’re bored, you can go to the world class casino, the Rijksmuseum to visit the Van Gogh paintings, and even take a shower in one of the shower rooms. But if you really want to do something unusual at AMS airport, you could try getting married. Four wedding packages are offered; two aviation themed weddings, yesteryear or contemporary, a Say Yes and Go wedding that is quick and efficient before you jump on the plane, or a luxury option where the newlyweds hire an entire plane or section of the plane and head out on their honeymoon right after the ceremony.
Play a Round of Golf and See 3D at Hong Kong International Airport
If you’re up for it and you have a few hours at Hong Kong International Airport, you can play a round of golf. Sky City’s Nine Eagles Golf Course is near Terminal 2 in the non-restricted area. It is Hong Kong’s first nine-hole golf course created to United States Golf Association standards and it is known for its signature hole situated on a small island in the middle of an artificial lake. You can rent everything on site that you need to play a round.
Located on Level Six in Terminal 2, this IMAX theatre shows 2D and 3D movies. It is designed to hold an audience of 350 people and offers a unique IMAX theatre experience with the largest screen in Hong Kong.
Get Your Flu Shot and Your Teeth Whitened at Chicago O’Hare International Airport
There’s never enough time to make a doctor’s appointment and get that needed flu shot or your teeth whitened. The University of Illinois, Chicago, has solved that problem for you with its service location within Chicago O’Hare Airport. The office is situated planeside between terminals 2 and 3 and is operated by UOI. No more excuses; use your next O’Hare delay (and there will be one) to get those pearly whites shining or that shot in the arm you’ve been putting off.
Next time you know you’ll be passing through a major airport and have time to spare, look up what possible services and attractions might be offered. You could find yourself screaming your lungs out as you fly down that four-story slide, with very white teeth.
