Travel questions come at me every day and normally I have at least a few answers in response to most of them. But when a friend asked me if I knew of any affordable yoga retreats, I was basically clueless. I promised to do some research, find out what’s out there, check on the reviews, and report back to her. Oh yes, I really offered to do the research so I would have some ideas for myself and to share my findings with you!
Find an Affordable Yoga Retreat Somewhere in the World
The first site I found was awesome — it fit the affordable yoga retreat criteria perfectly. Bookyogaretreats.com has hundreds of choices for retreats throughout the world. The five day/four night yoga retreat at Yoga Bless in Jamaica starting at $467 caught my eye. The program included classes, meals, a CD, beverages, snorkeling and even cooking classes. Another choice is a weekend yoga retreat in Provence, France for $340. But by far the least expensive yoga retreats listed were in India. The choices were many and you can purchase a full program for around $350/week. The site allows you to sort the options by type of yoga, preferred destination and whether you want to be with other women, mixed company, or family, etc.
Sixteen Budget Retreats from Hostelbookers
Hostelbookers.com has an incredible list of inexpensive yoga retreats from 6 EUR per night per person. You might think that you’re sacrificing comfort by staying at one of these cheap getaways, but Hostelbookers has done the research and come up with 16 destinations that offer great value when it comes to a spa or yoga retreat. In Kathmandu, Nepal for example, yoga classes are free at the Hotel Himalaya Yoga (lead photo) and a single room with private bath will set you back $18/night. These are basic accommodations but in a great location next to the Kathmandu guest house in a very popular area of the city. On the Island of Santorini in Greece, you can get yoga and lodging for around 20 EUR a night. Look out at the Aegean Sea while you enjoy free Wi-Fi, breakfast and shuttle transportation to the nearby area. Keep in mind that we’re still dealing with hostel-type lodging, but if you’re fine with that and want a budget yoga retreat, check out Hostelbookers.
Yoga Retreat Volunteer and Work Opportunities
If you have the time and the inclination, you can volunteer at a health/wellness retreat and get classes, food and lodging in exchange for helping out. Organizations such as WWOOF and Workaway offer such opportunities. While the sites don’t specifically list yoga retreats, if you Google “workaway yoga retreats” or “wwoof yoga retreats,” you’ll find several to choose from.
An Affordable Yoga Vacation in Paradise
The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas offers yoga vacations from around $100/day per person. They have so many programs to choose from and the fact that they price accommodations and programs separately allows you to select the combination that suits your style and preferences. Located across the bay from Nassau in the Bahamas (near Atlantis Resort), they focus on five aspects of yoga: relaxation, breathing, proper diet, exercise and thinking/meditation. The place gets mostly stellar reviews, making it a safe choice once you’ve done your homework and determined whether or not it fits what you’re looking for.
I was surprised to find so many options for budget yoga retreats. I guess the demand is there as people search for an escape, a little peace, and some relaxation these days. Plus finding a frugal yoga retreat is just another opportunity to see the world at prices we can afford.
