After an eight-night maiden voyage from Southampton, England, one of the most anticipated new cruise ships of the year, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas, arrived in the New York area yesterday, its home for the next six months. The new ship will officially be docked in Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey.
According to USA Today:
“At 168,666 tons, Quantum is the third largest cruise ship ever built and boasts such groundbreaking features as a deck-top ride into the sky and a bar with robot bartenders. It can hold nearly 5,000 passengers.
Quantum also is billed as the most technologically advanced cruise ship, with super speedy Internet (a first for the cruise industry) and an all-digital check-in process that promises to cut sidewalk-to-ship boarding times to under 10 minutes. Other gee-whiz features include the first skydiving simulator at sea and the first bumper cars at sea.”
One of Quantum’s unique features is North Star, a jewel-like glass capsule which elevates guests to more than 300 feet above sea level and provides 360-degree breathtaking views. But North Star is not Quantum’s only first-of-its-kind cruise ship attraction, as the ship will also feature RipCord by iFLY, the first ever sky-diving simulator at sea.
Quantum also features 18 restaurants, 11 of which are complementary, along with Dynamic Dining, Royal Caribbean’s revolutionizing dining option, which offers no set dinner times and no required formal nights.
Quantum, which is Royal Caribbean’s first new ship since the 2010, begins regular sailings from Cape Liberty to the Bahamas and the Caribbean on November 18.
Just like airplane cabins keep constantly improving, cruise ships keep getting bigger, with more dining and entertainment options. However, many cruise aficionados lament the fact that cruise ships are becoming floating cities.
How do you feel about that? Do you like the fact that cruise ships keep getting bigger and bigger?
