Alaska Airlines has recently announced that Japan Airlines (JAL) will be their newest partner—this means that when flying JAL, you will now be able to earn Alaska Airlines miles and you will also be able to redeem Alaska Airlines miles for flights on Japan Airlines. This is great news!
Alaska Airlines has a very interesting frequent flyer program. They are not part of an alliance, but they have many airline partners. Alaska has some great partners already, and some great redemptions, but this is definitely a good addition. Alaska currently partners with a few airlines that fly to Asia—Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, and Hainan Airlines. The Japan Airlines partnership provides quite a few additional flights between the US and Asia that Alaska Airlines members will be able to fly on while earning or burning Alaska Airlines miles.
Alaska Airlines has separate award charts and mileage earning for each partner. The rates for earning Alaska Airlines miles when flying JAL is as follows:
We don’t know what Alaska Airlines is going to charge to redeem miles for Japan Airlines flights, but we can use their Cathay Pacific Award Chart to get an idea of what those prices might look like.
Alaska has a more in-depth award chart for flights on Korean Air, which is a possibility for the Japan Airlines chart as well. When flying on Korean Air, the award price will depend on where in Asia you are traveling.
This new partnership with Japan Airlines is definitely a move in the right direction for Alaska Airlines.
If you want to use Alaska miles to fly on Japan Airlines sometime soon, now is a good time to earn a few frequent flyer miles. The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Credit Card issued by Bank of America offers 25,000 Alaska Airlines miles upon approval. The card has a $75 annual fee that is not waived the first year.
