Skyroam is a great solution to a common travel problem—unreliable wifi. With Skyroam, you will get fast, global wifi across Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America, and Africa.
Skyroam is an external battery pack-sized device that will connect to local cell networks and give you unlimited wifi access for 24 hours for as low as $8 per day which is a pretty sweet deal compared to what most U.S. cell providers would charge for a similar amount of data at similar speeds. The $8 per day rate is available when you buy five Skyroam day passes at once. Skyroam currently works in over 100 countries, but they are working to add more countries all the time.
With Skyroam, you never have to worry about running out of data or overages charges — the data is truly unlimited for 24 hours. However, Skyroam is not optimized for data-intensive activities like streaming video. If you use more than 350 MB of data within your 24 hours, speeds will be capped. Nonetheless, even capped data speeds should still be reasonable to load web pages, send emails, and other basic web activities.
The Skyroam hotspot can broadcast for approximately 8-hours on a full charge; you don’t even need to be near an outlet all the time — perfect for your next long distance train or bus journey.
My first use of Skyroam while I was in Uzbekistan was very good, and honestly, it saved my butt a little bit when I had things due and my hotel wifi wasn’t working).
If you want to try Skyroam on your next trip before you buy, you’re in luck because it is possible to rent Skyroam! It costs $9.95 per day to rent, including unlimited data usage. Assuming you were to use a pass every day during the trip you are renting for anyway, you would hardly cost more to rent vs. buy anyway.
Better yet — if you want to try Skyroam, just visit a Starwood Preferred Guest hotel! SPG has recently partnered with Skyroam to provide data to hotel guests while they are out and about during the day for a minimal fee. Going forward, it will also be possible to purchase Skyroam directly from your SPG hotel.
If you’re ready to buy now, Skyroam isn’t that expensive and for a limited time costs even less for FrugalTravelGuy readers — just use coupon code FrugalTravelGuy15 for $15 off your purchase through the beginning of September. The discount code is not applicable for rentals.
I was very impressed with Skyroam on my first use of the device and am looking forward to testing it out in more countries while I travel—I’ll report back!
