Sometimes when flights are expensive or otherwise not ideal, it’s necessary to think outside the box. Usually, it makes sense to do this in terms of looking at other routing options, dates, and flights to and from nearby airports. In the case of an upcoming trip, it meant planning a Kimpton-themed road trip.
Kimpton is a boutique-style hotel chain that was purchased by Intercontinental Hotels Group last year. To date, they have maintained their own loyalty program called Kimpton Karma. At the top level of Kimpton Karma, you’ll find yourself part of their “Inner Circle.”
One of the best benefits of being a Kimpton Inner Circle Member is their new hotel benefit. Inner Circle members are granted one free night at Kimpton’s new hotels within a specific date range. Additionally, members are also usually given a $50 dining credit to use at the hotel restaurant. It’s an amazing benefit if you can use it.
I’ve been part of Kimpton’s Inner Circle for just over two years now, though I will lose my status at the end of 2016. I’ve been able to stay at a few of their new hotels over my tenure as Inner Circle, but it is sometimes hard to work it in between location, availability, and the date range allowed for each hotel.
Kimpton currently has three hotels participating in their new hotel promotions: The Kimpton Schofield in Cleveland, OH, The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel in Winston-Salem, NC, and Tideline Ocean Resort and Spa in Palm Beach, FL. I didn’t think I was going to be able to use my free nights at any of them.
I’m heading to a wedding in New York though and return flights back to Detroit just weren’t good. I either had to leave at 6am following the day of the wedding to get a good price or award availability, spend almost $300 for a one-way flight in the afternoon, or stay an extra night in New York.
I didn’t want to have to be at the airport at 5 a.m. the morning after a wedding. I definitely didn’t want to spend almost $300 on a one-way domestic flight. And I also wasn’t super excited about spending another night in New York — I like New York plenty but I’ve already been three times this year for work and school.
I needed to think outside the box.
I knew about Kimpton’s new hotel offers, and thought I might go to Cleveland for a night and then take the Greyhound or rent a car and head back to Michigan. Flights to Cleveland were just as bad as Detroit.
I next considered the idea of going and staying at Kimpton’s new hotel in Winston-Salem, NC for a night and then heading to Cleveland. Flights anywhere nearby were significantly worse than going to Cleveland or Detroit.
Finally, I looked at flight prices to go to Palm Beach, FL. I was able to find a reasonably priced flight on Sunday afternoon and a car rental to take me back to Michigan.
I’ll get to visit all three new Kimpton hotels and stay for a night for free and will have a $50 dining credit at two of the three hotels.
As an added bonus, I’ll be stopping by to visit my Grandma and Aunt in Naples, FL.
I’m really looking forward to my Kimpton-themed road trip!
