Perhaps one of the most frustrating things about holiday shopping is the fact that you just know that much of what you’re buying is going to be cheaper right after the festivities have ended! Invariably, that TV, computer or appliance you bought as a gift will be deeply discounted once Dec 25th has past.
Well, there is a way to shop secure in the knowledge that you’ll indeed get the best price possible for whatever you buy— and it doesn’t require scouring retailer’s internet sites for hours or collecting a profusion of fliers.
If you shop with the right credit card, you can actually put money back into your pocket once your shopping spree has come to an end. Some credit cards have a (often sadly underused) feature called price rewind or price protection. Cards with this benefit will refund you the difference between what you paid for a purchase and the new lower price within a set period of time as long as the items are exact matches. (Note that price protection is different than purchase protection, which insures your item against damage or theft). Here are just two examples of companies that offer this perk:
Chase Cards
In the Chase portfolio of credit cards there are several that offer price protection, including Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Freedom. These cards will reimburse users the price difference on eligible items that were purchased with the card in the U.S. The products must be identical and advertised online or in print no later than 90 days after your original purchase.
It is up to the card holder to file a claim and the maximum reimbursement is $500 per item, which is capped at $2,500 annually. You must have an itemized, original receipt. There are some exclusions, such as cell phone service agreements, items marked “as is” and antiques, to name a few.
Citi Cards
All Citi credit cards offer the price rewind perk. What is especially unique about Citi’s cards is that, unlike other companies, the price protection service is automatic. You just need to register your purchase on the company’s price rewind website (https://www.citipricerewind.com/) and they will track 100s of retailers for 60 days to see if a better price is posted. If a lower price is found within those 60 days, Citi will refund you the difference.
You also have the option of submitting your own claim. Like Chase, you can get back a maximum of $500 per item for a total of $2500 per year. According to Citi’s website, from Jan to Sep 2016, the average amount issued was $26.26 and the company paid out a whopping total of $5,411,211 during that time.
No matter which card you decide to go with, knowing you’re getting the best price possible for your purchases is sure to elevate your shopping experience and take some of the stress out of hunting for deals.
