You don’t have to spend a layover trying to sleep in a lounge chair. These tours are perfect for filling hours you’d otherwise spend in an airport — and several tours don’t require a visa (but in these changing times, it may pay to double check depending on your country of origin). Plan ahead and you can soak in these cities for a few hours, and save the page-turner for the flight.
The Free Singapore Tour at Changi Airport
Changi Airport is nice, but a tour of Singapore’s China Town and Little India is better. If your layover is 5.5 hours or longer, you can sign up for a Heritage Tour or City Sights Tour of Singapore to see the “sounds, colors and beats, energy and electricity” of the city. Tours run throughout the day, but you do have to register ahead of time.
Won’t be at Changi that long? You can take a (free) walk in one of the airport’s 5 gardens (be sure to start at the butterfly garden if your short on time) or watch a free movie at one of the three 24-hour theaters.
Tours of Istanbul from Ataturk Airport
Basilicas, mosques and World Heritage sights are all on the agenda on Touristanbul’s tours. And they’re free if you’re flying in to Ataturk Airport — but only if you’re flying Turkish Airlines (and have a layover of 6 hours or more).
A Tour of Seoul, Korea from Incheon International Airport
It’s really easy to get out and see Seoul once you land — even if you only have an hour to spare. There are 7 tours from Incheon International Airport leaving 14 times a day.
Each tour takes from one to five hours and takes you to see most major sites in Seoul from Incheon Grand Bridge to Gyeongbokgung Palace — register first.
The only drawback? This tour isn’t completely free. Each person must pay a $10 fee.
See Taipei, Taiwan from Taoyuan Intl Airport
You’ll need to be saddled with at least a 7-hour layover to book a free Taipei tour. But, you’ll get to see a lot of the city while you’re waiting for your flight. Tours visit Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial hall, the Taipei 101 tower, Sanxia, the Zushi Temple and more.
There are two tours daily — one at 08:15AM and one at 1:45PM — and they’re each bookable upon arrival at the Tourist Service Center located in the Arrival Lobby of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of the Taoyuan International Airport. Read more about the tours on the Taipei Airport website here.
Take on Tokyo from Narita Airport
If you have a layover of 5 hours or longer, you can take one of 5 different 3-hour tours. Tourists can see the Narita-san Shinso-Ji temple, Museum of Aeronautical Sciences, take nature walks, visit the Shisui shopping outlets and more. You can read more about the tours here.
Also note that while the tour is free, you’ll have to pay any public transit costs and entry fees that come up on the trip.
Tours of Temple Square from Salt Lake City International Airport
If you’re in Salt Lake City, but not long enough to ski, that’s a bummer because skiing in salt lake is great. If you can’t manage to miss your flight, you can hop on a courtesy shuttle from the airport for a free tour of Temple Square. You’ll get just enough of a taste of the city to want to come back.
Terminals to Tarmac Tours at San Diego International Airport
If you happen to be at SAN at 1PM on a Thursday or 10AM on a Friday — or can arrange your layover around those times — you can take a tour of San Diego International Airport.
And there’s a lot to see. The tours are two hour long, each so be sure to travel in comfortable shoes.
