Earning rewards with credit cards is awesome. Be it cash back, hotel points or airline miles, they really help you save money on your spending. But what if there was a way to receive discounts on your favorite products just by using your credit card? Well, with some cards you can. American Express cardholders can save money at certain retailers by enrolling their cards in Amex Offers.
What Are Amex Offers?
Amex Offers is available to all American Express cardholders, including charge cards and co-branded credit cards. These offers change week to week, and some are targeted to certain members. Some offer discounts and others offer bonus points on a purchase of a certain amount. If you hold multiple Amex cards, you will notice that not all of your cards have the same offers. If the merchant of your choice is on the list, it’s a great opportunity to save some cash by making purchases you would make anyway.
In the past, we’ve seen some great Amex Offers, including $160 off a Delta Air Lines purchase of $800 or more, 5,000 bonus points for purchasing/renewing Amazon Prime membership and double points at select merchants, such as Whole Foods and Best Buy.
How I Stacked an Amex Offer for a Bigger Discount
Back in November, American Express cards offered a $100 discount on a Casper Sleep purchase. For those who don’t know, Casper is a mattress company that sells affordable sleep products. Please don’t judge me, but my old mattress was about 13 years old, so my back and I desperately needed a new one.
My fiancé and I had seen great reviews of Casper mattress and decided to buy one when we saw a Black Friday promo. So, I went ahead and bought the mattress online directly through Casper with the Black Friday discount of $150 and used my Starwood Preferred Guest Card from American Express to pay.
Immediately after making my eligible purchase, I received an email from American Express letting me know that the offer had been redeemed. The credit appeared on my statement a few days later. By stacking the two offers, I was able to save $250 on the new mattress.
How to Maximize Amex Offers Even More
In my case, I used a store coupon and stacked it with the Amex Offer for a double discount. To maximize my return even further, I could have gone through a cashback portal, but one of the two things happened. One, I forgot or two, Casper wasn’t a merchant partnering with a cashback portal back then. At this point, I don’t remember what it was, but you always want to look if a merchant partners with a cashback portal.
By looking at CashBackMonitor.com now, I see that two portals offer cash back on Casper purchases: Top Cashback and Giving Assistant. By making a purchase through either one of those online shopping portals, you can get 4 percent of your money back. In other words, you can get another $40 back on a $1,000 purchase.
Can I Use Multiple Amex Offers for the Same Merchant?
Officially, the limit is one discount per account, but there are tricks to utilize multiple offers on multiple purchases. Say, you have three American Express cards, and all three of them have the same offer of $20 off a Boxed order of $75. By enrolling one of your cards in the offer, it disappears from the other two.
To add the offer on all three cards, you have to open three separate tabs or windows on your computer. Log in to your Amex account, each time with a different card, and go to Amex Offers in each tab. Click on “Add to Card” on each of the offers, and they will be added to all of your cards. You will have to make three separate purchases with all three cards to qualify for the discount, but it will apply if you shop on Boxed.com often.
In Conclusion
Amex Offers are a great way to save money or earn some extra points on your American Express accounts. With enough purchases, it’s possible to erase your annual fees by enrolling in the offers and maximizing your discounts. If you hold American Express cards, Amex Offers are worth checking out for the extra savings on purchases you already make.
